Summary: White Sands is a good place to be alone.

White Sands is a lonely place to drive alone.

Its a flat ocean of sand attached to the sky at the edges only by mountains far far in the distance. The road feels simultaneously small and endless. Feels like a mirage that will fade away if she stares for long enough. Alone, driving feels like she's getting nowhere at all.

She goes anyway.

Sometimes alone isn't so bad. Once, a few years ago, she packed up an extra bag full of supplies and spent three days just lying in the sand staring at the sky. It was the first time she'd seen so many stars. All of a sudden the universe was in 3D and almost close enough to touch.

Sometimes alone is more connected than she's felt in a long time.

She always knows its time to leave when she's bored enough to start lighting the sand on fire. Its not like its all that complicated to pull off. But she likes to burn things, and if she isn't careful she'll throw something into the fire without thinking about it.

Today she's just passing through. For a heartbeat she regrets it, almost considers heading out to the nearest Walmart for provisions and coming back. But today she's just passing through, taking the long way towards someplace else, and she only stops long enough to eat.
