This is beautiful. The early line, "Full and fat on battered sausages, up way too late, he wonders if he can absorb this, this rare affection, or if he will just get soggy" was so powerful in the moment and the background it conveyed, and the details you choose for every just build on that.
The closing is just so Owen and my heart was absolutely breaking for him, and his situation. Such a fantastic interpretation of the line in Adam (and the prompt. But the TW quote struck me harder here.)

It was hard because you always picture him as being this terrible juvenile delinquent, but he can't have been so bad because he did get into medical school. And on the other hand you want to write his mother at least a bit sympathetic, but what kind of mom kicks out their teenage son? It's a balancing act.
But thank you so much, I'm glad you liked my interpretation and the way I portrayed it.

That's what made this for me, I think. Because, Owen's original line sounded (to me) as sarcastic. "Yeah, my mom was so terrible she kicked me out at sixteen. Thanks mom. Not." And I had no clue how to make it sincere.
But here! It legitimately was the best thing she could do for him! He was sinking even deeper living with her, kicking him out let him finally realize all that potential, and get into medical school and not be trapped in her emotional mess that she couldn't escaper herself. in some ways, I think I might love this one the best. It's just opened my eyes to possibilities I hadn't even conceived of.

I always pictured him as being a scrapper who rose up from adversity, and maybe he didn't come out whole, but man he did pretty damn well for himself considering the circumstances.
I'm so happy you liked it and found it relatable. Thank you, thank you.
