Jack POV
I enter the gateroom just after all the drama has happened. It's chaos, but none of our people seems to be injured. There is a stunned silence. Then I realize I hear crying, and my gaze goes to Carter, who is sitting just below the ramp to the gate, cradling Martouf!
Carter never cries in public! She never shows vulnerability like that!
I now see that Marty has been hit with several rounds, and is either unconscious - or dead.
I don't generally like the snakeheads much, but Martouf is actually one of the better ones. Loyal and honorable - as Tok'ra go, at least. I respect him, and I must say that I'm sorry he is the one shot.
Even more so when I look at Carter again. She is oblivious to her surroundings, focusing only on Martouf.
General Hammond is talking to that big wig Tok'ra, Per'sus or whatshisname. Anise tells Carter that Martouf's death will not be in vain, or some sort of platitude. So he is dead.
Carter just cries and cups his face in both her hands.
Why does it hurt so much to see her sad like this?
She is my teammate, and yes, maybe I have some feelings for her that I shouldn't have, but that man - Tok'ra - is my rival. Or would be, if I would ever risk my career or Carter's. Which I won't.
Which means that all that matters is that a good man is dead, and that my... teammate, is grieving.
I don't know what to say or do. I was never good at these situations.
It's been a couple weeks since Martouf was killed. Carter has been pretty quiet, and her smiles doesn't reach her eyes. She doesn't talk about it, though, and I can understand. I'm not the type to talk about my emotions either.
I know more than anyone what grief is, and everyone grieves differently. I wonder if Carter is like me? If she can forget, but not forgive?
Because I suspect she blames herself, because she was the one firing the killing shot.
I really wish she had not had to be the one to do that! I would have taken the shot for her, if I had been there - even if she had never forgiven me for it. I would rather she hates me, than herself.
Sometimes I wonder if what she felt for Marty was really all from Jolinar? Or if she even knows? The one time we asked her about Martouf, she said she had some left-over feelings from Jolinar, but that it wasn't a problem. They didn't affect her much.
That must be weird. Really weird.
Anyway, the way she looked when Marty was killed didn't seem like it was minor. She looked devastated, as if her happiness had died with the Tok'ra.
Well, she seems better today. This is the first real mission we've been to after it happened, and it seems to be good for her. I'm glad she's feeling better.
I better go check on Daniel, so he doesn't blow us up. You never know. He's studying some weird contraption, and if that wasn't enough, there's a damn storm. Carter says there's some radiation that might be dangerous, and then there's also this strange guy that was also looking at the contraption.
"All set up, sir." Carter tells me, matter of factly.
I really miss her enthusiasm, but I guess this planet is worrying anyone.
"Good. Let's hit it." I activate my radio and call Daniel. "Daniel, let's go home."
Unsurprising, he doesn't answer. He's probably caught up in studying some alien gibberish. "Daniel?" I repeat.
It sounds like there is some sort of energy buildup.
Teal'c has clearly noticed it too. "O'Neill."
"Yeah, I hear it."
Weird arcs of energy starts jumping between each other at the tops of the temple, and the chevrons of the Stargate flickers on and off. That can't be good!
The Stargate activates! Down!
We all throw ourselves to the floor. When I look up again, the energy is dancing around near the gate. If energy can dance. Sure looks that way.
Maybe that idiot guy we met here is causing it? Malikai or whatever. "Are you doing this?" I shout at him.
He turns around. "Stay away!"
The hell?! Daniel is unconscious on the ground! Carter is running to him.
"Daniel!"
"What the hell are you doing?" I run to Malikai and grab him, at the same time Teal'c does.
"Stay back!" Malikai just tells us.
I am not going to listen to someone who is probably causing this! If Daniel is hurt, Malikai is going to get it!
"Colonel!" Carter calls.
Suddenly everything is engulfed in a bright light.
