This place is like...I can't even describe it. I found a 3-in-1 Cagney DVD for $3, a copy of Irish Boston (brand new!) for $1.40 and a copy of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet (also brand new!) for $1.50. Everything is 90% off, but the minimum is $1. I also saw the book Marlene Dietrich's daughter Maria Riva wrote about her mother, and a copy of ( Read more... )

reading never solved anything

Those are crazy cheap deals. Which movies are on the DVD?

I looked at the address for the store and I was like "Cambridge, yes!" but then I realized it's a different Cambridge not in central Boston and I was like aww. Can you get there with public transportation?

The Great Guy (I found a VHS of that on the shelves before I found the DVD), Blood on the Sun, and Something to Sing About. I've seen the first, but not the other two.

Cambridge St., in Burlington, is out in the suburban jungle, about a 5-minute drive from my house, actually. You could probably get there on the T, but I'm betting it would be a crazy, convoluted route. Although you could always take the train to Woburn and we could drive you over, give you a taste of Boston-style suburbia. There's one in Lawrence, too, but I think that would be as much of a pain in the butt to get to on public transport.

Hehe!

Jess' lovely friend Christina sent me a late birthday present of Maria Riva's book that she happened to find in a $2 book store too! lol

I haven't read it yet but wow is it full of rare pictures. And from everything else I've ever read about Dietrich, I always get pointed to THAT book, so being me and obsessed, I knew I needed to own that book sometime.

Jess laughed cuz she told me over the phone that I was getting that book-to make sure I didn't already have it it-and I went silent for a minute, squeaked and said 'I love you'. Even though it was her friend who gave it to her to give me.

... Thus ends this random blurb. ;-)

I've been there twice already. I like that the best sellers are brand new. However I wish they would organize the paperbacks. I can't find any Jodi Picoult novels. However I could spend hours and hours there!

ooooh, that's a must go. Is this near the dance shop and Building 19?

Yup, about, eh, 1/3 of a mile further along, past Shaw's? Do you remember that pool & patio warehouse that kind of stood out in a lot of its own? That's the bookstore now.

Yes, I know that place. It's close to the tiny gym supplement shop I used to go to before ebay ;-)

I shall have to pay a visit, it sounds amazing. I miss hunting for used books, all the best shops have gone under, or are just really hard to reach these days.

Beyond general categories, the shelves are pretty chaotic, which I find fun. It's not a place to go if you're looking for something very specific, because then you'll just go mad with frustration.

Their mission statement is very admirable.

They have rather cute, eccentric armchairs, as well.

I do miss the ones that would sometimes pop up around Christmas, then disappear again long before Valentine's Day. There was a vague and harmless skeeviness to them that I always found charming.
