A Fresh Plate of Rei-hate from TVTropes

Apr 05, 2012 00:57

Okay, before I get to the report, there's a few disclaimers I have to get through. Disclaimer the first, I actually like TVTropes, and am a member there. I know it's got this reputation in certain corners of the Internet (including, based on that Nozomi post, this one) for being full of creepers who loudly trumpet the fact that they spank the ( Read more... )

character a vs. character b, female characters, evangelion

I really don't get the Crow hate. True, he kinda came out of nowhere, but so did most of this show's character (though I guess Crow's crime was to become a main character? that's ridiculous to hate him for that reason alone! How about we start looking at things like his personality or dynamics with the others (which I think worked well) rather than his status?), and he's pretty likeable overall imo.

I think part of it's because it was only through executive meddling that he became a main character at all. The story goes that once the Blackwing cards started selling like hotcakes, the Konami suits ordered the anime crew to make him a main character, which ended up sinking a lot of the crew's intended plans, including a rematch between Rua and Bommer that would presumably have resulted in a much earlier appearance of Life Stream Dragon, a backstory for Demak, and the original Fifth Signer (who would've been someone we'd never heard of before), all in the name of selling cards. That still doesn't explain why people bash Crow, though, as all of this obviously isn't the fault of Crow, the writers, or even showrunner Shin Yoshida (the fandom's usual scapegoat), but rather that of greedy card game executives.

And the issue of toy tie-ins that never get to exist in the first place is a whole 'nother barrel of wank; Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom is still waiting for action figures of Katara (as distinct from that ineffectual white imposter), Toph, Azula, Suki, Ty Lee, Mai, and Jun.

(Dare we hope that a female protagonist will do the trick for Legend of Korra?)

Hey, a fellow Shinji/Rei fan! :D

Someone should tell this guy that in the manga Shinji/Rei is, if not canon, then really close to it.

Also that Rei is far from emotionless there too.

If I am permitted to ask a stupid question...how is being stoic being a "bitch"? Also, "It doesn't matter if my argument doesn't make sense because I'm entitled to my own opinion?" Well, I think that the sky is green. So what if I'm wrong? I'm still entitled to an opinion. :eyeroll: Do some people really not see the difference between an objective truth in canon VS subjective opinion? Claiming you like an amoral character is subjective opinion. Going on to claim that said amoral character is actually a sweet little flower would be ignoring the things the character does in canon and thus be violating an objective fact. There's a reason the Draco In Leather Pants and Ron The Death Eater tropes exist.

On a closer look, it looks like this "Chariot" guy is one of those TVTropes misogynists people mentioned in the Nozomi post; he's bashing the female cast of Digimon now. Because how dare Jeri break down in the face of unending mindrape, right? He's really quite annoying.
