So is it normal to sometimes get resentful of a certain character and/or their fans because they tend to fuel a lot of the bashing your favorite character gets (and in general get the love and sympathy of the fandom at large while you/your character is left out in the cold)? I'm not saying it's healthy or justified, I'm just wondering if anyone ( Read more... )

I get that a lot. Then again, I'm not sure if I'm the best measure of what's normal. But yeah, you're not alone.

You're not alone. Hearing all the time how character X is so much better than character Y, who you like best, leads you to wonder what's so great about X and liking him or her less than you would have otherwise.

I've had that with Hinata Hyuuga. I like her a hell of a lot more when Naruto Forums and TV Tropes aren't ramming down my throat how she's so perfect and better than all the other female characters, especially Ino and Sakura (those WHORES). The fandom seems hellbent on making them into sworn enemies and rivals for Naruto, just like with Karin and Sasuke, when no such rivalry exists, although Kishimoto isn't helping at the moment. Same with Rukia and Orihime, and this is coming from someone who prefers Rukia ( ... )

Thing is with me though, Ghinius does commit some nasty crimes due the to going batshit insane over the course of the series. Aina (his sister) doesn't. However, what annoys me is when fans insist Ghinius is and always was a completely terrible person (despite evidence to the contrary) and that Aina is a completely wonderful and pure heroine, whom he had to have mistreated and abused her entire life and she's oh-so-sad because of it (while their relationship was close to unhealthy levels, there's no evidence he was actually abusive towards her in any way. If anything, the series shows he's generally kind if not overprotective of her until he starts loosing it, and his behavior to her towards the end of the series is NOT normal for him ( ... )

I had this happen with me with Sesshomaru from InuYasha. I never minded the guy to begin with, but then his fans started to defend absolutely everything he did, especially after Rin was introduced. What really got me in the beginning was when his call Kouga a murder and ignored the fact that Sesshomaru's a killer in universe, too.

And then the author started using him in more and more ways that made little sense. But what really broke my back with him was how she wrote him into the final battle with Naraku. She wrote Kouga out of the story when he had a reason to want revenge against him, and put Sesshomaru in his place instead even though Sesshomaru had a much weaker reason to be in that fight, but his fans didn't care about that.

I got really sick of him after that point.

This. I mean in the same arc that he meets Rin, Sesshoumaru's shown literally sitting in a building full of people he'd just slaughtered just because he needed a place to hang out.

Him getting his arm back bugged me as well. No one else got back things they'd lost like that, even people who were innocent and just hurt by Naraku, but Sesshoumaru got it back despite the fact that its loss was his fault entirely (and despite the fact that he still treated his brother badly, the reason he lost it in the first place). It was such blatant favoritism on the part of the author. It really did kind of kill his character for me.

I never found him interesting and didn't get what the big deal was if it makes you feel better. But then again I have this problem with 9/10's of the cast of InuYasha so...

I think so.

It's hard not to start associating characters, or even an entire series, with the fans who are actively hostile towards something you enjoy.

Invariably, someone always starts playing compare and contrast with characters and why they do/don't deserve things, and it hits the point of 'no return' faster than an argument about 90's nostalgia.
