Wow, you guys couldn't wait to start bashing her, could you?

You guys, you all know well what happens when the hero/heroine of an X series turns out to not be a super badass who takes everything coldly/passionately, has emotional damage from the shit that surrounds them and doesn't immediately run into action?

Bashing. And in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica fandom, it has already started.

Defending Madoka Kaname. Spoiles up to episode 6. )

what measure is a non badass?, crying "nice = evil!", crying "it's all your fault only!", crying "sensitive = weak", puella magi madoka magica, crying "how dare you be realistic!", crying "not badass enough", crying "angsty = bitch!"

Also, let me remind you peeps of something. Being ~darker and edgier and cynical ~ does NOT equal to something/someone being inherently better. Remember all the burn-out coming from the Nineties Anti Hero type, when the super badass and asshole-ish heroes ended up becoming so common in media that people started to get bored of them? It's the same here. Just because someone is more cynical, doesn't mean they're OMFG perfect and always right, and that a person who isn't all about the badassness is a stupid bitch/asshole/idiot who should be "corrected" via Real Life. Not everything in life is wine and roses, yeah, but not everything is grit and thorns either: the whole "Reality is Horrible And Terrible And Daaaaaark" gig can be just as tiring as "Everything is Sunshine And Puppies And Love". :PHow many times do we need to say this before fandom gets it? Fine, people can prefer cynicism and dark and edgy things all they like, but that doesn't give them the license to bash happy things and try to make people who like happy things sound ( ... )

I guess that Shinji would still get bashed were he female, based on Madoka fandom. *sigh*

And why the blind Kyouko love, anyways?

I don't get the Kyouko love, either. Her introduction made her already appear sketchy, and everything she's done since then paints her as an insufferable sociopath.

...maybe I should be afraid of Madoka fandom, on reflection.

Draco In Leather Pants syndrome, I guess. She's more pro-active, more aggressive and fight-happy, has a cool Magical Girl outfit, and didn't give a fuck about anything but herself until she learned the truth about the Soul Gem deal...

I saw the speculations in the Madoka Wiki and wasn't OMG IMPRESSED with how some people go to extremes to try justifying her behavior. Kyouko is fine as a chara and offers a nice foil to people like Madoka, Sayaka and Homura... but even if she really *was* homeless and almost starved to death once like people speculate, it's still not an excuse for her shitty treatment of Sayaka.

I wasn't aware of these speculations but let me just say I see none of this anywhere. It might of course be still right (or at least partially right), but so far I see no indication of this being factual - and as long as it isn't, it IS very DILP.

I agree with your assessment that she's a nice foil - as compared to the other characters - but that still doesn't excuse her attitude in regards to them. Her very introduction scene paints her as someone who only cares about getting her hands on grief seeds to the disregard of the victims (or other magical girls) involved and while this is a somewhat realistic approach, it still shows her to be unlikeable. Her actions since then? Noooot making it better.

I can understand why people don't like Madoka, I really do (I personally have the urge to yell at her to take the deal and revive Mami - more because Mami is my favourite character and I want to see her revived than for other reasons), but latching onto Kyouko instead... it just skeeves me out a bit.

Judging by the descriptions, I'd say this is not the type of series that's all rainbows and butterflies. So, why the accusations of it being that way? I guess obscure fandoms aren't that safe.

I'm with you on the "Angst is better!" mentality that sadly permeates our culture. But you know how some of the same people turn around and say to a character/real human, "You have no right to be so whiny, you overprivileged jerk!", even when they're suffering from legitimate problems, like Tidus from FF10, even though he isn't even angsty! At least not generally.
