Dear Romano bashers,

Yes, Romano is grouchy and bad-tempered. Yes, he isn't exactly sweetness and light towards Spain a lot of the time. Yes, I can see how some people might not like his character.

Your claim that Romano is abusive towards Spain in canon, however, is one that I find unbelievable.

( So where's all this canon evidence that Romano abuses Spain? Because I'm just not seeing it. )

fanon =/= canon, crying "too popular!", axis powers hetalia, male characters, crying "asshole!", "good traits? what good traits?", die for our ship, crying "short-tempered = abusive!"

Are you me? No, seriously. I was thinking of defending Romano myself, specially after the huge debacle at the kinkmeme discussion post where people were falsely claiming that Romano was a canon domestic abuser and vying for him to get beaten up or even killed because they didn't like his behavior IN A FANFIC.

I don't even like romano or spamano that much, and yet the abuse that he's been getting in fandom lately is fucking ridiculous.

I saw that kink meme discussion post too. Though it was really just the cherry on top of some general posts I've seen lately about how Romano is so obviously abusive and that Spain/Romano fans are too blinded by their irrational love of their pairing to realize how abusive and unhealthy "canon" Spain/Romano would be, plus some posts from a while back that used "creative" interpretation to twist canon events to make Romano look worse than he really is. (I wish I was kidding about the "Romano doesn't quite reject Spain's proposal = Romano just wants to use Spain" claim.)

Spain/Romano isn't my favorite pairing either (though I still love it), but I was like "Have you even READ the webcomic?!" at these posters. I thought it was blaringly obvious that Romano cares for Spain but was just too proud to show it openly in canon, just like how Germany sometimes berating and complaining about Italy doesn't mean that he doesn't like him, but apparently not.

I love both Feliciano and Lovino, since they're both awesome in their own ways. I don't really like Spain, but I don't feel the need of proclaiming it to everyone - why can't people do the same in regards to Romano or other charas they dislike, huh?

When I saw the Romano bashing posts at the kink meme, I got irked enough to make a request for "other nations think Romano is abusive towards Spain when he's really not, and mistakenly try to break them up". I might fill my own request just to spite the bashers.

I suspect that it's for the same reason America/England is both the most loved and the most vocally hated pairing in the fandom: popularity. The more popular a character or pairing becomes, the more likely it'll receive hate from people who think it doesn't deserve its popularity and want to make their opinion very, very clear. It kind of makes me glad that my favorite pairing isn't popular enough to garner the same amount of wank that these two pairings do.

I wish the fans would realize that these are anthropomorphic countries, not actual humans. They aren't going to be perfect, but they aren't all evil. Even Russia is sympathetic to a degree. And yes, Spain isn't that perfect. He obviously doesn't realize that Romano is uncomfortable. He's a bit spacy, isn't he?

Ugh, so agreed.

Romano's far from being my favorite character, but really, this bashing is so uncalled for. Yeah, he's a dick with a short fuse at times, but he's not a monster nor is he abusive.

On another note, I also can't stand Feliciano bashing by rabid Romano fangirls who blame him for all of the latter's problems...

Thanks for writing this. All that Romano bashing (especially about him being a homophobe) is baseless and just plain ridiculous. I thought people would have more sense than to merge fanon with canon, but apparently not. They're hating on Romano for being a "homophobe", but yet they themselves are being just as prejudice and ugly with their own hate, going so far as to detail his suffering and death. It's pathetic.
