oh hay, random passing thought.

To some Mai haters out there, not those who are simply turned off by her personality, or whatever, but Zutara/Zukaang 'shippers who hate Mai SPECIFICALLY because she got in the way of your 'ship.

vaguely spoilery rantcakes )

bashers suck, crying "third wheel", crying "tomboy = bitch", love triangles, crying "feminine = bitch", female characters, love interest = slut, avatar, crying "love intrest = bitch", crying "reserved = bitch"

I don't think there are any Zukaang shippers who hate Mai. Especially since it is impossible to get in the way of Zukaang. ;)

I would love to think so, but I've seen it (maybe a case of the little man speaking the loudest?) Oh well, I'm not gonna let that ruin my alt 'ship of choice. *loves on Zukaang*

Well alright I'll believe you I just never saw it before.

I find it odd that any Zukaang fans ever expected Zukaang to actually happen romantically in canon. But as a Zukaang fan myself I would think most fans of the ship would be happy with the canon!BFF and all the innuendos that we did get.

But Maiko is lovely too of course!

It was one of the first Zukaang fics I almost read, but didn't, unfortunately. It gave me a bit of a bad first impression of that corner of the fandom, but aw hell. That pairing is love. I'm not scared away so easily! ;D I'm willing to be convinced that many more awesome people make up for it.

I'm certainly happy with the slashy Zukaang treats, but my heart does lay with Maiko big time. I like seeing Zuko loved and smooched and topped by a chick. <3

And seriously, how hard is it to write fanfiction where Zuko and Mai, a TEENAGE couple, respectfully grow apart and break up?

Yes, this. It happens all the time. (Not that I'm wishing it on Zuko and Mai, but it happens.)

Even adults break up without needing to make a bash-fest out of it.

Yes, and I would read a fic like that, too, especially if the resulting pairings in the end were Mailee, or Zukaang. *slash goggles ON!* Hehehe...

I'll possibly be willing to have a foray into Zutara out of curiosity, granted I'm pointed toward a fic where Mai and Aang are treated well, and act believably.

You know, I hadn't started watching Avatar yet when S3 started, but I remember when the Zuko/Mai clip aired before anyone had ever seen them interact as teens. Suddenly, a character I'd never heard of before was the worst thing ever and a horrible girlfriend and OMG THE WHORE OF BABYLON!!!

And I almost never watched the show because, hey, I could have been infected by the fandom.

Unfortunately, most female characters seemed to be looked at primarily through the lense of whether they support or interfere with a ship, and whether or not they're good enough for the beloved male.

THIS. VERY MUCH SO. And unfortunately at that. There is so much more to characters than who they're tongue-bangin', and yet. :( Oh Mai, I'll love you enough for a hundred people! Fuck fandom.

Nonono...there's more to MALE characters than whose throat they're sticking their tongue down. FEMALE characters are only there to be love interests, and can't be regarded as anything else. In fact, as soon as they show up, we should start looking for them to become someone's love interest. If there is the slightest hint they will be interested in someone, they should be assumed to be nothing but a love interest, and thus, suck.

Yes, i have been told that.

Feel urge to puke now.

And Mai is more awesome than most of her haters combined.

WHY NOT JUST SHIP HER WITH TY LEE? MOAR YURI, EVERYBODY'S HAPPY (and anybody who isn't can suck it).

WORDETH! The Intarwebs could use more good yuri.

Hee~ IchiHime (I prefer TatsuHime, but that's OK!) And how can you NOT love Rukia? XD She has too many great moments, and I'm not even halfway through Bleach yet!

Bleach fandom is scary. It explained to me that fandom trend where, if there are 2 females who even look at a male, you must either hate both, or ship one with the male and hate the other. It explained much to me.

*sets the stupidstupid trend on fire*

I fail to see how anyone could ever possibly hate either one, myself. But then, that's my usual reaction to learning one of my girls is hated.

Seconded. 'Hime and Rukia are both so damn lovable, but of course. Silly me, female characters have no personality! Their ONE PURPOSE is to worship the ground The Man They Want walks on and NOTHING MOAR DON'T U NO.

I haven't finished watching Avatar, but I really like Mai. Especially her voice.

I kind of think the shipping, etc is amusing, but then again I only watch it from a distance.

Mai does have a great voice, doesn't she? Great lines, too.

Silly srs bsns 'shippers from a distance are funny, but explicit and unnecessary character bashing is not.
