Defending a character at the expense of another. This may or may not be the most common thing after bashing and/or squeeing, I don't know. But I've seen it. It happens with pairings, too

That, to me, seems like the ultimate in irony. Particularly if said defenders are of the mindset "PEOPLE WHO BASH SO-AND-SO ARE TOTAL H0RZ," because pot, kettle, how ya doin'?
ug I hate that definatly XO I don't see too many examples often, but it sure is oxymoronic. Sometimes I'm all happy to see someone defending a character/pairing but then in the process they bash another character/pairing that I like! Very dissapointing. Especially common in like, pairing/character wars where say... (for lack of a better example)the people trying to defend Inuyasha/Kagome but in the process bash on Kikyo or Kikyo/Inu or both at the same time.
It comes across as very counterproductive to me. Defending a character by bashing another one and trying to make them look better in comparison is just not going to come across as a very convincing or reasonable argument, is it?
I've come across the same Miaka/Yui situation, actually. I've seen it in Harry Potter fandom a lot as well (surprising, isn't it?). Fans of the girls seem to be very fast to first claim that poor Hermione/Ginny/Luna is so very bashed and that they are SO ahead in the competition for liking the most bashed character NO REALLY don't you DARE say your favourite is more bashed!, and then go on to explain how wrong that is and why the other two should be bashed instead.
Yes, and I think I've found at least one case of that in every fandom I've been in. The biggest recent example for me is the Bleach fandom, where Rukia and Orihime both get bashed by the other's defenders.
It's especially annoying when I love both characters... which is usually the case.
