On Winry and Episode 26

May 09, 2005 11:06

Well, episode 26 of FMA aired Saturday, and, as when it first came out in fansubs, there's been a lot of Winry hate floating around. People call her selfish and immature for her actions in it, and proclaim it as a shining example of why they hate her.

Here's my take on it. Obvious spoilers for the episode contained within. )

Okay, I actually really ADMIRED Winry for having the metaphorical balls to slap some sense into Ed. He gets a big head sometimes, and I think she was really strong to be able to see that and knock him out of it.

Geez. Fangirls will look for ANYTHING to try and get reasons to trash their hated character.

Thank you! I wrote an essay about Winry just a couple days ago (here, if you want to read it *plug* but warning for entire series spoilers!) in which I made a point to discuss that particular episode for that reason. Even though I think what she did in that episode was pretty stupid and she could have gotten her point across better in some other way, I think people miss the point of why she did it -- you know, why the episode is titled "Her Reason." It wasn't for selfish reasons, it was for the opposite; because she cares about Ed ( ... )

I really don't like the way she tried to get her feelings across. It felt extremely selfish and bratty. But I do understand why she did it. And really, I can see her looking back at what she did and being embarrassed that she tried to get her point across in the way she did. When she just walked by and hit Ed with her wrench, I actually applauded her for that. He deserved it. It was the watch theft that was fairly bratty. There had to be a better way where she could prove that she was helping him a lot by helping him with the automail and trashing automail was trashing her help.

...have my babies? Please?

Lol, you summed that up perfectly. God, even if you want to bitch about the importance of the watch to Ed, she may not have even TOLD Paninya to go for the watch, just to pick a fight with him or SOMETHING. I'd be wicked pissed if someone dissed my hard work the way Ed does, unthinkingly. And it all worked out ok in the end, and Ed sure as hell doesn't appear to be holding a grudge.

If anyone should be defensive in this episode it's Al. He didn't do anything but he gets the silent treatment too! Lol!

Ah yes, anime girls aren't allowed to have flaws or make any kind of mistake...but they also can't be too perfect, because both ways, they get bashed and hated for existing.
In an anime male, flaws are a sign of a a well-constructed and realistic character and mistakes are character development, not really mistakes at all. In a girl they're just a sign of the evil of having two X chromasomes and the lady-bumps that go with them...or something.

*sigh*
