I enjoyed the Tenchi series as a whole, but what I don't get is why many people hate the third outing, Tenchi in Tokyo. Could it be because of the new girl, Sakuya Kumashiro ( Read more... )

I just didn't like it because it wasn't very good.

I haven't seen all of any Tenchi yet (most of Universe and some of the OVA) but I have this one on tape and haven't watched it yet. I'm definitely going to check it out though, I'm a little interested based on what's been said here. (I like Ayeka anyway, first of all, and while I have nothing against Ryoko/Tenchi I can pretty much take it or leave it. Though I must be the only one who likes Tenchi and says that.)

I only saw Tenchi in Tokyo once through, dubbed, about 4 years ago, so I can't really comment in too much depth, but as I recall, I didn't like it for the fact that the animation was kinda uglyfied. I didn't mind Sakuya... she was interesting.

Mostly I didn't like it because it messed with the timeline of the previous series. And I realize this seems to be a hallmark of the Tenchi series: reusing the same characters in different situations and whatnot, but it just REALLY annoyed me.

Oh, and, Sakuya was one of the more annoying love interest Tenchi has had. (I really have no preference who he goes with; But Sakuya was just not cool like the other girls were.)

*reads spoiler from other post* Huh, didn't know that. Couldn't really stand watching the entire series. (for what it's worth, I didn't like the rest of Tenchi that much either.)

Yeah, I'm one of those people who weren't very fond of "Tenchi in Tokyo". In fact it's my least favorite Tenchi series. The animation was rather bland and the characters themselves were rather bland/annoying in that series too. I hated the way that some of the characters that I once liked were turned into one-dimension and bland counterparts of their old versions. The storyline wasn't as good in my opinion either. Not to mention that Tenchi became rather a jerk in that series.

As for Sakuya, well in the beginning I found her to be rather bland, flat, and a little uninteresting. Towards the end she starts to get a little interesting but still, something was misssing about her character. I don't hate her or bash her character, but she doesn't really hold my interest either.
