I don’t know about you, but when someone says “Selihot,” my heart sinks, because in my experience, selihot are Hebrew Text Walls of Doom, muttered incomprehensibly and far too fast, punctuated by wails of Divine Attributes which are the only bits I actually recognise. Sound familiar?

I wonder if "vengeance" is a good translation, but I'm probably apologetic and it is. Have to look into that shoin. It wouldn't contradict justice, of course, in fact it would specify justice at the most, or be just another word for it at the best.

Re text walls of doom - you should try out the selihot book from the Yesod Malchut folks. Before Artscroll came out with their Interlinear books with the Patent Pending Arrow-head Marks, about a year or two before (kinda ironic to cry Patented! about an idea that was only necessary because you stole an idea from another publisher), Yesod Malchut came out with interlinear siddurim and tehillim. I have the tehillim, it's great for explaining things, your eye just flicks down to the modern-Hebrew explanation below the large-print poetic-hebrew word.
