In May this year a collection of Australian media organisations, including News Ltd., Fairfax, AAP, the ABC and others, formed a coalition called Australia's Right to Know. Last week the independent audit they commissioned into freedom of speech, information and the media was completed.

Yeah, very. I'm up to the fourth chapter and it's interesting to see just how much can be concealed from the public by simply changing the points of contact journalists have within any level of government.

There's pretty much no such thing as background or off-the-record material as no public servants are allowed to speak to journalists anymore, everything goes through particular PR contacts. Basically the fourth estate has been sub-divided and sold off as housing commissions.
