Bedsharing may be new, but sharing sleeping space isn't. Pre-industrial revolution, there generally weren't separate sleeping spaces unless you had a lot of money. Otherwise, it was the whole household in one room.
Sometimes I do think I sleep better in a separate bed (particularly when Bill is snoring), but saying that that's the way we evolved is a little sketchy. We probably had to much more share sleeping covers and space and huddle for warmth than otherwise.
