I did not know this about the difference in maple trees in Montreal.

But I think it's more to get the middle-class vote of people who spend way too much money on hockey equipment, which is expensive. I know there are equipment exchanges in a lot towns as kids grow too big for last years stuff. Probably the reason a lot of folks worldwide like soccer is because all you really need are good shoes and a ball. And sometimes you don't need the shoes.
