I think there's a difference between awarding entry fees from one division to the winner of another division, and an event like this where outside donations are being allocated to the top prizes. (Although, I'm not opposed to either.) It's not a conclusion you can draw from these numbers that lower divisions are subsidizing the upper division, without a detailed accounting of what donations are coming from where. It's entirely possible that tournament expenses are coming out of each div's entry fees equally.
I don't see a problem with this prize layout, and I'm not just saying that because I'm playing div 1. To my mind, the point of a tournament, especially a major like this, is to reward the players who perform the best, and those players will be in Div 1.
I'm pretty sure we'll have to agree to disagree on this. I do see your point, I just don't agree with it.

Yep. I can't get upset about it either, and I'm in Division 2 with (arguably) a reasonable shot at some cash, but I'm happy that the real big dog or dogette will get the nice hefty payout. If the prize payouts were due solely to subsidization from other divisions, I would have a different view.
i'm frankly happy chris didn't kotow to pressure on cgp - let's make first prize something decent to shoot for. that attracts more people (such as the large thai contingent), gives the PC MUCH more credibility, and increases our chances of being taken seriously by the media/etc.
I have to disagree, along with some of the other posters here.
As one of the lower rated players in the top division, the odds of me winning a cash prize at the psc are very long. So it's not about the money for me. But it might be if the prize scale was equable, because I qualify for the second division and would have a much, much better chance of finishing in the money there.
I'm sure you're not the only person who would like to see the money distributed equally across the divisions, but it isn't the case the other divisions are financing the top group. The fact that, unlike many tournaments, you know the financial parameters prior to competing makes it equitable. Anyone not liking the conditions can still withdraw and get their money back. Most everyone won't, however, because they realize they are getting a lot of return for their money - apart from the chance to win a few bucks.
