Trip to the E.R.

Mar 28, 2007 10:55

I've been rather sick for more than a week now. Started with a cough and cold, then became the flu. Despite taking numerous OTC meds, symptoms worsened. Then the headaches started. They were worse than any I've ever experienced--extreme jolts of pain that lasted only a second, but that were excruciating ( Read more... )

It really is beyond ridicuous that in a nation which claims to be the wealthiest on earth, people are ruined by the misfortune of becoming ill while between jobs, or while in a job that doesn't provide insurance. It goes to show that the people who run the country care more about profits for insurance companies than they do the health and well-being of the people who elected them.

Yeah, the health care situation is beyond a crisis. There aren't any easy answers, as all socialized medicine programs have problems. But Canada's model, while far from ideal, beats ours rather handily.

Update: The coughing persists, and the severe headaches have returned. They aren't quite as severe as they were yesterday, and they're spaced out a bit more, but it's still excruciating.

Thanks for the good wishes...

I made a lame joke about the "pain going all the way to 11", and the doc clearly didn't get it.

Do you think it was an age thing or a cultural thing?

I remember when I became old: I was discussing some fatally flawed product launch with someone and I made a New Coke reference and the other person had no idea what I was talking about.

Good luck with whatever it is; "if you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything."

Both, I think. The doc was probably in his mid-30's, so a movie from '84 would have been "before his time". But it's also probably not a flick that would appeal to the med school crowd.

In any case, though I'm still coughing, the headaches have diminished greatly, and the fever seems to have broke for good.

I never take my health for granted these days. Diabetes and hypothyroidism have made me very aware of how fragile life is; this current episode, while painful and traumatic, will definitely make me appreciate coming out the other side.

What a drag it is getting old...

I hope you feel better as well Steve. I don't think the spinal tap joke is an age or cultural thing (i'm in my late 20s and i'm a black girl from ohio who LOVES spinal tap)...that doc just doesn't have a discerning taste in movies, obviously. he's probably a sandra bullock fan. harrumph.
