1. Speaking with Seamus
As he rounded the corner, Harry slammed right into Seamus. "Whoa, Harry. Where's the fire?"
"Oh ... um, sorry Seamus. Just needed to get away ... well ... never mind."
"Does this have something to do with that walking nightmare you call a best mate?"
"What?" Harry winced. He narrowed his eyes. "What do you know about it?" he said, the anger bubbling close to the surface again.
Seamus put his hands up. "Relax, Harry! Nothing to worry about, mate. I just overheard Hermione and Ron talking, and I want you to know that Ron is being a stupid wanker. Who the bloody hell cares, anyway? It's your business, and you should do what makes you happy." He let a small smile creep onto his face as he looked up hopefully at Harry.
"You won't ..." Harry began.
"No. I won't tell anyone. I'll leave you to decide who should know." Harry breathed a sigh of relief, and gave Seamus a genuine smile.
"He'll come round, Harry. Don't you worry. He's just in shock, is all."
As he went to find Draco, Harry found himself wishing that were true, even if he didn't believe it himself.
2. Fair Weather Friends
When Harry finally caught up with Draco, he found him looking sullen. His face, if possible, was even more sad as he looked up at Harry. "Hi," was all Draco said, and then he glanced back down at the book ("Nightmares - not such a bad thing") he was reading.
"Hey," Harry replied.
"Did you see the weasel?"
"Mmm."
"It didn't go well then?"
"You could say that."
"And?" Harry looked up to meet Draco's gaze. He looked worried.
"And I told him that I wasn't going to apologize for who I am." At that comment, Draco's lips twitched. "And that I'll not be friends with a narrow-minded prat like him." Harry put his head down in his hands.
"You told him what?"
"I told him I couldn't believe I had ever considered him my friend."
"Oh, Harry," Draco whispered with sincerity. Harry was taken aback. Sure, he knew Draco wasn't the cold, shallow person he would have everyone believe. But he hated Ron. Harry had expected Draco to be smug, jump for joy, gloat, or something equally immature. Well, how about that? Who would have thought that Draco would be the one taking the high ground, while Ron …
3. Coming Out of Hiding
Harry didn't return to the common room, nor did he have dinner in the Great Hall. He and Draco had spent the rest of the day in the Room of Requirement, mainly talking. It was something that Harry and Draco had not spent much time doing before, as they rarely could keep their hands off each other long enough to do anything else. It had been different - comfortable, even. Something had changed today. Harry found himself looking at Draco with an entirely different feeling floating in his chest.
Draco looked up to meet his eyes. Something flickered in the grey depths that looked like … well … more. Harry felt a flutter in his chest as he smiled at his ... boyfriend? He looked at Draco curiously. "What?" he asked Harry, returning his earlier smile.
"Let's stop hiding," Harry said. "I want everyone to know how I feel about you."
"And how is that?" Draco asked, his trademark smirk making an appearance.
"I think you know," Harry said, as he leaned in for a kiss.
"Scared, Potter?"
"You wish."
Ready to face anything, with Draco by his side, Harry steeled himself for the inevitable publicity nightmare.
4. Coming Clean
“I'm sorry," Ron began, before Harry could yell at him again. He looked sorry. "You caught me off-guard. I had no idea, not a clue. You're my best mate, Harry. Talk to me."
"So talk."
"Harry, this came out of nowhere. We've gone through a lot and figured things out together. This … well … this just totally threw me off. You never told me anything. You never even hinted that you didn't like girls. And there’s Ginny. I thought we talked about everything." Harry rolled his eyes.
"No, listen. We work through things together, but this you worked out yourself. You didn't trust me enough to ... well, never mind. It’s not about me. I just wanted to tell you that I suppose I was ... hurt ... that you didn't tell me sooner. So maybe I could've helped you work it through. That's all." He looked up at Harry hopefully.
Could it be that the nightmare was over?
5. One More Thing
Ron and Harry looked up as the portrait swung open. Hermione came through, followed closely by Seamus and Draco. Harry had told the other two Gryffindors about their relationship yesterday, and he wanted to tell Ron today.
“Ferret! What are you doing here?”
Draco raised an eyebrow at Ron, then cast a knowing glance at Harry, who smiled at him. It was a small thing, but it made Draco’s heart lift in his chest. They were really going to do this. He had had his doubts. He thought that Harry might back down, but he was happy to see that his boyfriend was planning to follow through.
Harry placed a hand on Ron’s shoulder, and faced his friend “Ron, there’s something I need to tell you … “
“Oh, God, Harry, no. I mean, I get the gay thing. Well … I don’t get it, but I’m OK with it. I really am, I swear. But Malfoy?!? Why him?“
“Are you sure you really want to know the answer to that, weasel?” taunted Draco, as he winked at Harry. He really was enjoying this.
“Merlin! Now this really is a nightmare!”
