Don't You (forget about me)

May 17, 2010 08:36

I had a meeting with the school last week. I couldn't sleep a wink the night before, because usually these meetings make me feel like I've been put through a meat grinder ( Read more... )

Good on ya!

Things like that annoy the fuck out of me about schools these days up here. Kid doesn't step up, school passes them anyway...what exactly is the consequence of not doing the work? We churn out a bunch of kids that have no work ethic and who aren't prepared for life. As for the lack of discipline standard, don't get me started.

I spent about seven years in total within the BSD. Years of reflection have made me really wish that I hadn't because if anything I felt like when I got to high school the machine just turned the juice on higher. I can recall two classes in total that I enjoyed and by Junior year I was taking everything I could from WCC. I got out with semi-decent grades but at that point it really didn't mean shit to me.

I can so identify with this! I feel like the school works at cross-purposes with me at every turn with my kid. And what burns my ass the most is this air of feigned concern that everyone I deal with has...but they don't do shit to work WITH me as a parent to make sure my kid gets the best education he can.

So good for you! And thanks for putting into articulate powerful words so much of what I haven't been able to express about my own misfit family!

Yes, exactly - I too feel that the school is not willing to meet me anywhere remotely in the middle when it comes to my kid's success. I feel like the teachers are just clock watching until summer break, when he won't be "their problem" anymore. Fuck those guys, you know?

Fuck them is right. I used to be so hardcore pro public education, but it's been a real disappointment to see how they deal with kids who are quietly labeled by teachers and staff as not really mattering. I am beginning to think that alternative schools and non-mainstream education may have something to offer after all.

Interesting you should mention that, as Tristan's therapist has suggested an alternative high school:

It took me awhile to get behind this but after touring the school and talking to the (two) administrators there, I think is the right place for him.
