Ariel Dubois could feel her anger and pain start to melt as she watched her mother interact with Lee Scanlon. She hadn’t seen her mother this happy in years, not since before the problems between her and Joe Dubois became so bad they slept in different rooms and barely spoke to each other because they knew it would to lead to another fight. After almost a year and a half of this, neither could stand it any longer and Joe ended up moving out. After a another year of separation they realized that it wasn’t helping - not enough to repair their relationship - and soon after they divorced. Joe got the girls for the weekends and for the holidays they decided to share them. The girls tried to show their strength throughout this time, or at least Ariel tried too however sometimes all the hate and fighting got to her and she fell asleep crying every night.
It was a year after the divorce that Ariel began to realize that her mother and Detective Scanlon were spending a lot more time together, and it wasn’t until her friend pointed out to her that she realized what was going on. After confronting her mother about it, she found out that the suspicions were correct; her mother was dating Lee Scanlon… and she really liked him.
At first, Ariel tried ignoring it, but after awhile her sisters fell more in love with him and he came over a lot more than he used to. To her disgrace, she started to like him a lot more. Lee Scanlon was a great detective and a great guy… but she tried to stick to her anger whenever she saw them together. Her mom belonged with her father and no man could change that.
Except the reality was that her mother and her father weren’t going to get back together, despite her wishes they would. Both of them would love each other until they died and cared for one another, but they just couldn’t be together anymore. In the end, she let her anger go as she realized how much happier Lee made her mom.
She didn’t want to stand in the way of her mom’s happiness.
THE END.
