Things are stressful around our house right now. Manly has to have eye surgery (he has to have the vitreous humor removed from one of his eyes, and diabetic-related damage fixed. It's gross and terrifying), and the cherry on that sundae is the $2,000.00 copay. For which they won't let us make payments - it's 100% up-front ( Read more... )

At least it's not 2009, which is my new benchmark for 'life sucks eggs'.

{{{hugs}}} Life sucks. I know many of us are money tight, but I know that I'd be willing to help as much as I can with that copay issue. Do you have a paypal acct?

Aw, you're so sweet to offer! But we'll figure it out. I think we can borrow from Manly's 401K - not ideal, but it'll work. It's just stressful.

I'm sorry. :-( Eye stuff is scary, I know - lots of that in my family recently. And your mom! Poor thing. Sending good vibes your way.

It is super-scary. At least there's no retinal tear on top of everything.

I hate it that all I can do is send longdistance sympathy. Manly's eye is terrifying. May the surgery be quick and may he heal even quicker. Your poor, poor mother. This is so entirely sucktastic, from her injury to her doctor's indifference to your brother's...whatever. The time of darkness is ending soon. Hang tight.

Jack had that surgery, and did well. He just had a cataract removed too, and the doctor offered to write him a note saying he doesn't need glasses any more. And he was told he would go blind in 1991. He was lasered when it was quite a new procedure. Yeah, it's terrifying, but it worked VERY well.

Was it traumatizing for him? The way they described the surgery, I think I'd have to be tranked like I was a tiger. What about his recovery? Did he have to do the face-down thing? (Thankfully, it looks like Manly will just need an eyepatch.)

When Jack had his vitrectomy, he had a general anesthetic. He did not have to do the face- down thingie. He did have an eyepatch. He didn't seem traumatized, but then he prides himself on never freaking out.

Eye surgery grosses me out, but the patients that we care for (a couple of the eye surgeons work out of our area weekly) seem to do really well. They don't get knocked out, they get anesthestic drops and some sedation.

The doctor told John that when they prep him, they'll put him under, but they'll wake him up to do the procedure. ::shudder::
