Fic Rec!

So, over the past few weeks I've had the privilege of reading passe_simple's Be One Traveler in e-mail snippets. It's figure skating RPS, Evan Lysacek/Johnny Weir, and I know that isn't up the alley of most of my flist. BUT. It is a FANTASTIC fic and pretty much reduced me to paroxysms of glee at every update, and since it's RPS it really doesn't take all ( Read more... )

since it's RPS it really doesn't take all that much background to understand

That cracked me up, since I just made a post this morning angsting about how the (RPS) fic I'm working for LGBTfest is incomprehensible without extensive knowledge of background. :D

Hahaha. Ok, point -- there is certainly RPS that does need a lot of background knowledge. Luckily, this particular fic isn't one of them! But the deeper you get into a fandom and the more you learn, it's inevitable that it'll show up in your writing. RPS is CONFUSING for me because I have this need to make everything EXACTLY RIGHT according to canon, and that... is difficult when "canon" is "reality" and you can never know everything.

I READ A LOT.

Seriously, I look back at some of my early comics fics and CRINGE at things I know to be inaccurate now. But I usually manage to get something of a timeline correct, and know what it's ok to handwave, or where to take something AU, and I'm fine. It's harder to find those places in RPF! But that's not to say comics AREN'T hard (she says, as she stares at her half-finished comicsbigbang...)
