Romancing The Wizard

Dec 15, 2008 19:43

I just posted a 500-word ficlet to romancingwizard, a Arthur/Molly, Mated Pair. I feel Molly and all the Weasleys get short shrift, are near demonized in this ship actually. For the record, I like Molly. I like the Weasleys. Dumbledore used Harry. Sirius only saw James when he looked at Harry. Remus, Minerva and Arthur kept their distance really. Snape only ( Read more... )

Bambu does wonderful betas--but especially since my style is spare, she tends to add to my wordage--at first when I got the beta, I groaned, but bless her knowing the com she put in suggested cuts. I know one trick sometimes is to look for adverbs and adjectives to cut, and she found one way to cut just by changing "and sheathed" to "sheaving." I feel your pain...

And seriously squeed when I saw your name among the prompts.

I didn't participate this round because with Christmas, I just knew it wasn't going to happen! I am going to enjoy the stories, though.

Question - was she an original Order member? I thought she had just too many small children around then...
I like Molly as well. And Arthur. As you said, they have their flaws, but they try to do what is best for their children. They have managed to raise all their children to productive adulthood, and I don't think that is *despite* their efforts.

The Lexicon says this about Molly:

Molly is a very capable witch in her own right. She is one of the "old crowd," a groups of witches and wizards who are faithful and devoted to Albus Dumbledore. Molly is clearly a force to be reckoned with, not only for the errant Daily Prophet reporter who wants a good story about the reports of a flying car (she tells them to clear off or she'll set the family ghoul on them), or for her sons, who cower before her wrath even as they tower over her, but also for those who want to see Voldemort rise to power again. Dumbledore talks to her not as a silly housewife who gets a bit giddy about Lockhart but as a friend and ally. It would be a mistake to underestimate Molly Weasley.
I just think Weasley-bashing has risen to just about toxic levels in the ship. I have canon characters I can't stand myself--particularly the Marauders, including Remus who many love. And I can't abide Lucius. But I think when you write characters, you have to be careful to be fair to them, even in original fic, if you don't ( ... )

Interesting. I haven't really seen much actual Molly-bashing. Pointing out her flaws without stopping on the positives, yes, but not much bashing that doesn't have at least some basis in canon ( ... )

I really don't want to name stories, because I don't want to generate wank or hard feelings, but I've read story after story where Molly is reduced to the mother-in-law from hell, this terrible shrew that makes all around her miserable--often in such stories, it's not even limited to Molly ( ... )

I agree, it's a nice little site. It went quiet for a while so it's nice to see it back. I prefer reading the various snippets that pop up there. I agree that the Narcissa ficlet was very nice. =)

I think it could really make a nice bridge for some GS100 stalwarts, longer, but not that much longer for people used to writing drabble series--it might even be easier in some ways.

And yes, it had been inactive for a while. It's nice to see stories posting there again.

I will proably be a GS100 stalwart to the day it ends. Nice try. =D

Now now--tis not a choice between.

And I hope you will be. Long live GS100!

Hee. It's a fun group. I'm really anticipating some great stories given who has signed up.

Last night I read (and reviewed) back to July. I skipped a few pairings that didnt interest me, but read most of the stories. Thanks to your good advice I am now watching the community. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm surprised you weren't aware of it actually. I know Subversa and Bambu have both posted stories there among others. It's a nice middle point between GS100 and the usual one-shot, and SSHG-friendly. I'm glad you enjoyed a look around there.

I've tried to keep an eye on it for a while, but the way it's built up is just too intimidating for me. And generally the posts with prompts go up at a time when I'm already in bed, so the few times I've been tempted, all interesting prompts are already gone... *sighs*

I don't read a lot there, as I just can't muster up any interest in romantic pairings outside SSHG. But in general, I do like the idea of the place.

That is the draw back of the com for a OTP shipper--at least this round--just doesn't lend itself to SSHG. Not interested in say Snape/Lily? Other ships? I can't blame you actually, I rarely read outside the ship. But I have to admit, when I said I could see this as a nice place for some GS100 regulars, I did think of you.

It's not as intimidating as it looks, actually. The prompt system isn't so different than a GS100 challenge, and it's moderated quite lightly. Neither I nor Silburygirl had a request for any changes to the text, and others I know have reported the same. And after all you've posted drabble series in one post close to 500 words--even exceeding it so in some ways this would be easier.

But if not this round, keep your eye on the com anyway--most rounds do lend themselves to SSHG.

I think it's all the lengthy posts of rules and conditions and everything that make it look intimidating! I bet it's not so bad after the first time, when one already knows things, but I tend to have this terrible fear of getting something wrong.

In some ways, it looks more complex than writing a drabble (or five drabbles) - in a drabble series, or at GS100 in general, the length of the story isn't limited after all, as long as it comes in chunks of 100 words. Getting a whole tale done in 500 (or 750, as I think they've had before) words seems to be a lot more limiting (and challenging).

I do keep an eye on it, and might well sign up in the future, but as I said, it's tough to be around when there are still more than a handful of leftover prompts to choose from! Perhaps I'll be lucky some day though. :-D

I lurked a long time--and yeah, it looks intimidating with all those rules--but once you do it once, it's not really that bad.

Because GS100, not only do you have to make sure it breaks strictly into 100 words, but each drabble has to have a mention of Hermione and Snape ( ... )
