Great Works of Fantasy

I was discussing with silburygirl the works of fantasy we've read and loved, she was wondering what she'd missed out, and that caused me to pull out my (literally) falling apart copy of A Reader's Guide to Fantasy, Searles, Meachem and Franklin, eds (1982) long out of print and thus out of date. Nevertheless, I thought I'd share with you, and her, it's "Seven ( Read more... )

It is a good meme. I love how good fantasy creates such interesting plot and detail with very understandable emotion.

I also really loved The Once and Future King. I had always wanted to read a King Arthur book, so it was a nice accomplishment.

One book that isn't on the list that I also love is Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark. It is a book that really stands out for me; one of those books that I'll always remember because of its richness.

That vaguely sounds familiar. Another one for the list of to-read!

The first part of the list isn't mine, but from a book that listed the classic works--woefully out of date though. Some author's not mentioned above I'd like to get around reading sometime are Pratchett and Gaiman among others--a lot of people on my f-list rave about them, Pratchett in particular.

And you're very welcome!

I didn't care for my first taste of Pratchett either, but I think if I try another sometimes soon, it only makes sense I try the collaboration with Gaiman, Good Omens A two-fer..

Been a while since I've read the Kushiel Books, but as I recall the love scenes are steamy without using anatomical, p0rn, or purple romance aisle euphenisms, a minor miracle. IIRC, she takes advantage of the fantasy pseudo-French settings to make up some words for acts and anatomy so it doesn't seem as jarring to me as many explicit love scenes.

I did love the books in that series, and ultimatey found them moving. She also has two books in another universe, but I didn't like those as much.
