I’ve been trying to stay out of all the Wankage, as I rarely spend time at Whispers, but the more I read about it, the more my head wants to implode. This story is just unbelievable.

Eats, Shoots and Leaves is a delightful book, so I’m not surprised that she’s making a sub-book on commas for kids. (That really sounds like a bad fund raising drive - Please Support Your Local Kommas for Kids Chapter. Hubby thinks I’m a bit mad for liking a book on punctuation, but then again, after proofing a paper written by ten Ph.D.s I’m convinced none of them has even hear of a comma.

Flight of the Valkyries? *Cocks eyebrow* That and ‘Hall of the Mountain King’ is what always runs in the back of my head when I’m in an angry mood. What does this say about your mood? :-)

I usually stay try to stay out of wankage. I did post some time back on how I felt about those on WIKTT who thought it was fine to complete someone's else's fic w/o permission, or write unauthorized sequels, or borrow another's fictional characters. I truly think this is similar ( ... )

I agree. I've been toying with writing SS/HG, but it would be my first story, and now I'm totally paranoid to enter the fandom.

That would be a shame, and truly, if anything, this situation should encourage you--in a strange way it encourages me. The fandom didn't ignore this--they rallied around Azrael, they got her database back for her, and I think Whispers will be stronger than it ever was. Whispers hadn't been getting many reviews toward the end--I had stopped updating to it. But to show my support, when the new Whispers goes up, I'll post all that I have of my WIP there, and my short.

Several other authors say they will do the same. "Hermione" has been subject to scorn and satire throughout the net. I think the next person will think *long* and hard before doing something like this again.

Fandom can be scary--but you can sidestep the wank fairly easily--just don't post on it on LJ or on WIKTT. IOW, don't act like me. LOL.

I'll try to keep that in mind. :) If I actually manage to get anywhere with this story, I will try to archive it at the new Whispers. Everyone seems to agree that it's the best place to start out.

I wandered here from bambu345. She said you mentioned AS Byatt so I came to read the rest of your post.

I love AS Byatt too. Her short stories are wonderful, and Posession is truly lyrical--all her works are; she's a master of language.

High Fidelity is a wonderful book too. Really excellent.

Your list is really excellent.

I won't comment on the Whispers thing, done that already elsewhere. It sucks for everyone.

This is actually the first thing I've ever read by Byatt--but I'm thouroughly hooked. I didn't know she wrote short stories--I'll have to look up more of hers. I have read other books by Hornby though--About a Boy

And yeah, the Whispers thing sucks--I think it did need to get out there--but I think it is slowly resolving itself.

On another note: I starting reading HG/SS right when PtQ had just been abandoned. Whatever happened with that? Why was it such a big deal? I heard there was a conflict between two authors over the "canonness" of Riley's portrayal?

It was before my time, but my understanding was that there were multiple controversies surrounding the fic and that Riley added fuel to the fire by the way she went after her critics on WIKTT--it's the uber Wank.

Would you agree with that sentiment on the HG/SS LJ community?

I don't know that I'd agree it's close. There's a lot that goes on beneath the surface and definitely factions and cliques. It's certainly a small world in a way in the sense that the fandom tom toms very quickly spread any controversy and certain names keep coming up. But I don't know that's really any different than in any fandom or ship.
