Happy New Year! 2010

Thanks to everyone who gave me those fic prompts--even if I can't jump start my muse lately. Definitely on my Resolution list: write (and finish book of shadows).

I have been reading a lot instead--trying to plump up the non-SSHG recs for Know-it-Alls by making my way through crack_broom. I find I really am sadly OTP and close to burn out reading in other ( Read more... )

Copperbadge is an awesome writer. He wrote a Harry/Sirius that wasn't squicky at all because of a but of magic in the Maurader's Map. Really, I'm not kidding, not squicky at all. "The Cartographer's Craft" was the name of the fic. I think he also wrote a Snape/Hermione/Remus fic ("Three Coins", maybe?) that was really good, too.

He's also written stuff in Who and Torchwood, and I always know he's good for an excellent fic.

He's amazing. All those are rec'd on KIA btw by others, so I haven't read the ones you've mentioned. What I had read before this month was a Remus/Tonks, which I rec'd on KIA very early on because it was well-written, but I wasn't satisfied with the Remus characterization--I rarely am. I just can't see Remus as this leader and alpha wolf. But I have loved Copperbadge's way with the character in other fics.

*sigh* And my list of What To Read next grows. ;) I passed over Sea Change when I saw it, because of the pairing, but I'll put it at the top right now.

I've found lots of misogyny and romance trope drek in SSHG

Aaaand... yes. I find I can't read much SSHG now without getting disgusted. Ah, well. Bring on the slash! Although, I see far too much in slash of Poor-Severus syndrome. I try to avoid that now. The first instance of, "He looked in the mirror and scowled, thinking that no one would ever find him attractive, especially not XX. He moped off and considered slashing his wrists because he was so unattractive." That last bit may be overkill, but you get the idea. Other than that, it's all good.

SSHG definitely has things commonly seen in it that are pet peeves of mine--and I find the good far enough apart these days to indulge in reading in other pairings--although I think I could use a break now...

With crack_broom I'm cherry picking though--these are fics someone loved enough to rec when they only had 8 slots to do it and months before they could try again. So I'd expect I'd do better than, say, just fic trolling generally on FFN to find the good SSHG ( ... )

In a way, I'd love to discuss the issue of what makes m/m slash different, in another, I don't know how to frame it w/o touching off wank.

I suspect the only way to do it is to limit the discussion participation to people who you're absolutely certain can discuss it dispassionately. Usually any conversation about the merits of slash versus het tends to derail just as soon as someone takes it all personally. Unfortunately, if you limit the participants, you limit the conversation, too, so it's ultimately something of a no-win situation, I think.

Yeah, I know. Thus the "in a way" I thought of several ways of trying to frame the discussion and not er...offend but...

The above seems to follow actually for just about every fandom-related issue I wish could be discussed--that you'd want a wide range of opinion but don't want the nasty, personal side to come out.

I think slash really is very different in ways that have nothing to do with the obvious.
