This is great stuff-- and so necessary. The books frustratingly side-step how presumeably loving parents like the Grangers would respond to the weird and dangerous world their daughter lives in. I thought you did a great job expressing the three differing perspectives-- magical teen, muggle parents and magical adult. And I especially liked how Molly Weasley managed to be at once alienating (the bit about 'well, we used to just take children like Hermione...' was especially perfect) and sympathetic towards the Grangers.

"I can't always agree with how the Headmaster's dealt with Harry, Hermione. Or you. Giving an eleven-year-old boy that Invisibility Cloak that first year--then rewarding all of you with the House Cup for what the three of you did--it's as if he wanted Harry to go after You-Know-Who by himself ( ... )

You know it's interesting, because Dumbledore's behavior always bothered me well before I entered fandom so I wasn't even aware how common this trope is when I originally wrote the chapter.

Yet despite that, before Book 6 sparked my interest in Snape it was AD who was my favorite character. I think him and Snape, at least in my conception in this story are very much alike. Both willing to be ruthless with themselves and others - because it's necessary - but you pay a high price.

And yes, it always bugged me that even during every vacation Hermione was anywhere but with her parents and they were never by her side when she was hurt. Strange.

it's hard not to love AD-- he's so funny and compassionate and wise. But that compassion coexists with a certain amount of ruthlessness, and I think that's what's tricky to put together: the manipulative general and the kindly daft uncle are in fact the same person.

And of course, that ruthlessness has no place in a parent's heart-- the Grangers and Weasleys have every right from their perspective to object to things he does, even if AD's actions are justified in the bigger picture.

And yes, it always bugged me that even during every vacation Hermione was anywhere but with her parents and they were never by her side when she was hurt. Strange. I know-- one wonders if they put up more of a fight before letting Hermione head off to the burrow every summer.

I've read loads of HG/SS, a bunch of R/Hr believe it or not trying to get Ron's appeal (I want to be fair to him) and now I've been getting into DM/HG. All Hermione pairings--yet I rarely, rarely see any of this even mentioned, let alone the implications teased out.
