A new addition...

After picking up Jackson, our year old chocolate lab, from our friend's house following our road trip, we realized it would probably be a good idea to get another dog.  Jackson was so thrilled to have a playmate for those few weeks that we felt pretty awful bringing him home to spend time with a couple of really boring people, in his mind.  That ( Read more... )

"In a couple fo weeks?" And she's already 6 weeks old? The experts all say that, especially for labs, they should be brought home at 7 weeks old. The 49th day itself, precisely (although I'm sure there's a day or two without much damage). But yeah, 7 weeks is the right age to introduce them to a new home, new parent, and remove them from their mother. If they stay much longer you'll have a dog with separation anxiety who destroys the house everytime you leave.

Just some helpful advice from a life-long lab owner.

It might be a California thing, but no breeder will sell off a puppy under 8 weeks of age. The breeder we're working with allows us to come over and see the puppy as often as we want just so that she can get used to us. The week for turn over may be due to health reasons so that the breeder can take care of the 6-8 week vet shots and make sure the puppy is reacting okay afterward. All I know is we have no choice but to wait, and we'd run into the same thing with any breeder out here. We're still getting the puppy, and it's a lot sooner than we got Jackson as a puppy--he was three months old.
