This is both heartbreaking and revealing of the obsessive/possessive side of Chris that clings greedily to Toby. I always liked that Chris was self aware and that he knew he had issues. In this drabble I think you've also captured his vulnerability in needing Toby so much, that for all of Chris' power and strength, Toby was like this little piece of humanity in him...and it made him do crazy things.
What a wonderful comment. Thank you so much. I think he just absolutely is at a loss on how to explain to himself his commitment to Toby. He just can't control it, and he's used to controlling everything, so he can't control *himself*.
FWIW, I was picturing this little talk with God as taking place after Chris makes the phone call after seeing Toby in the visiting room. Ruining his parole. It doesn't have to take place then, but in my head it did.
Chris own need is so great, he can't help but damage the one thing he can't afford to lose. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. He can't let Toby go, but by trying to keep him, he loses him anyway.
