this, as is all your writing, is good. But the thing I find intriguing is that the motivator for Keller getting to know Toby has been removed. Would this, then change their eventual relationship? would they bond over other things or would Keller, which is where I am leaning toward, keep Toby at a distance and not become involved and fall in love and give so much of himself over to Toby. I can't see Keller putting himself out without a reason. By Vern being gone, that reason is gone. I wonder what Keller's reaction to the brand will be, and will that be the empathizing moment that brings them together or will it push Toby farther away because it announces his prag status? Such a simple thing to change, yet the ramifications for both men, and OZ in general, are huge.

*wanders away rubbing my brain*

Well thank you, I was hoping it would play ambiguous on some levels. Of course I would like to think that somehow, someway, B/K would still happen, but taking Vern out of the equation does raise some doubts. Keller would undoubtedly hear stories, learn that Vern had been there and made Beecher would his prag. Would that shared history of Vern draw them together, or further apart? I don't know, but you're right, it is intriguing to think about, and although Schillinger is the anti-George Bailey (of "It's a Wonderful Life"), when you take him out of the picture you really do realize how crucial he was to many of the events that happened in Oz.

Yes, off to a nice snarky start, aren't they? Glad you liked it, Dawn.

I know it's supposed to be B/K, but I have to say that your Said made me very happy.

Toby crossed his arms over his chest, slouching down in the chair a little more. “Schillinger’s a racist prick, he’d get a rope and lynch you if he could, Said. Do you love him? Did God make him?”

Said sighed, expression troubled. “Schillinger made himself what he is today, and no, I don’t love the sin or the sinner. He’s not worth hating,

Like that.

Well thank you. I don't write Said enough, and when he does turn off he often winds up in the thankless role of getting on Toby's case for loving Chris. It's always a treat when he can be put to better use like this, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Oh what a great twist of fate! Man, this makes me think. Now I'm wondering how they would have gotten together with no Vern to play matchmaker. Hmmm...very good food for thought - and a great flashfic!

This wasn't even what I was planning to post. I had something in progress at about the time I got sick, but it stalled on me, and then another idea wouldn't quite come off, and this came out of nowhere. It is fun because it does make you ponder what happens next, what chain of circumstances would have to unfold now for the guys to come together. Or would that happen at all?

Like I wrote up above, although Vern is the anti-George Bailey, he is the catalyst for so much that happens in Oz. Remove him, what how does it all fall into place then? Would even worse things happen, making it a case of, "better the devil you know?"

Anyway it was fun to do, and I'm glad you liked it.
