I love OotS! I'm so happy for him.

Well, as an author, I can tell you that losing thousands of dollars a year to the shiftless jerks does tend to make one bitter. There are lots of good people out there, too, though. Crowdsourcing works well if you have a large fan-base. If I put a donation box on my website I think it would fill with cobwebs, not $400k ;p

You know, that's a funny thing, though. Now that I'm thinking about it... It seems to work well for online comic books. I've seen people do very well at financing print-runs that way. I wonder if it is something about that community?
