Two films to see: Scoop and A Scanner Darkly.

And they couldn't be more different. Scoop is a light fun comedy with appealing actors that is funnier than anything Woody Allen's done in years. A Scanner Darkly is a pitch-black comedy-satire about paranoid addicts in the near future. Both are worth checking out, since both are better than 95% of what I've seen this summer ( Read more... )

1) Being a former manager at Beach, I am interested in knowing what happened to you there.

2) Try pissing on most of the floor of somebody's room, and then taking the cup of pee that overflowed onto the person's floor and sticking underneath their not so sturdy futon.

I agree its worth seeing, but A Scanner Darkly wasn't nearly as good as I hoped it would be. The book makes a lot more sense...the movie cut out several characters, nearly all of the relationship between Arctor and Donna, didn't adequately show Fred/Arctor's degradation over time and just how fucked up he was by the end, and there was almost no time spent at New Hope, which was a BIG part of the book. Plus the memorial at the end was cut to less than 1/3 of what was written in the book, and really didn't make that much sense to me without the first 4 paragraphs or so.

....maybe if I hadn't read the book I woulda loved it, but I feel that the filmmakers didn't make the script faithful enough to, or radically different from, the book, so what you end up with is a mish-mosh of scenes from the book that aren't connected by the plot intricacies and character development that made the book so enjoyable and realistically ridiculous. As it is, the film doesn't really make sense to me.

Oh well I agree with all of that, and things certainly could have been made clearer. But even as the jumble that it was, it still was more funny, interesting, and full of life than the majority of the movies I've seen this summer.
