Winston takes offense over the idea that the Party, in its bid to control the past, can control people’s memories.

Why can't I remember these parts of 1984? I remember their time in the rented room. I remember their time walking among the proles. I remember that they betray each other and are each collected into the massive jowls of Big Brother at the end. But I've completely blocked the rest out. How he met Julia, for instance. It dovetails nicely into what's written above. I have spaces to fill. What is written will fill those spaces. Even if what's given to me doesn't exactly fit with the previous version of the book I've read. We are sad little creatures, we humans.

Even when I read a book a half a dozen times, I can be surprised by what I have forgotten or overlooked. Though, I would be surprised if you read some truly different version of the book. I imagine there might be editions that are more Englishy or Americanish, but I would expect them to be practically identical.

I really shouldn't come to LJ after I've taken a sleeping pill. It's stupid of me. What I meant was that if someone gave me fake details to fill in the parts that I can't remember, they'd fill in the spaces just as nicely as what's in the original book.

If you see anything I've written after 10pm NYC time and it doesn't make sense it's because I'm half asleep and mostly stupid.
