I think it all depends on what type of character death you have and how you approach it in your story. Readers, in general, don't want to see Edward or Jacob killed off if the story revolves around them, but they're flexible if you kill off either a character they don't like or a side character that has a smaller role.

Using one of my stories as an example, I'm planning for two characters dying in Intermediate Imprinting (it's not a spoiler because it's in the warnings in my story header), but they're side characters. I know people will be upset, but it's important to the plot of the story.

Here's an artical I found helpful on the matter: http://www.helium.com/items/1842375-writing-character-death-in-fanfiction

IMO, I think that you can kill off a main character if you do it tactfully. It depends on the type of story you're writing. It doesn't have to be a depressing sob-fest, but it can actually seem like a ROMANTIC sob-fest if you make them die at the end, or very end--it can be like Romeo and Juliet if you write it to be like that. And if you write their death in a serious manner, that is to say, if it's a character that you don't like, and you go 'Oh well, they're dead, now let's move on' that doesn't seem realistic, and especially won't to the reader. You don't drag it out either--you just bring it up, time and again, subtley, and make sure it has a proper place in your plot. But you don't have to take my advice, that's just imo ^^; character death is actually one of my specialties >:) lol
