Lisa pulls up along the curb, parks and gets out. She’d seen her picture and committed to memory the image of the girl, woman who Lincoln never seemed to forget. Surprisingly they had never crossed paths. And it could stay that way but Lisa decides today is the day. Lisa steps out of the car, closing the door behind, before calling “Veronica. Veronica Donovan.”

Veronica stops and turns. The woman walks toward her. “Do I know you?” Veronica asks the closer the woman comes. Her mind answers her own question when she is close enough for Veronica to make out her features. No, she doesn’t know her but she knows of her. And she has seen her in face of LJ. There are times when LJ doesn’t look like Lincoln so Veronica assumed correctly that he must look like his mother, a woman she had never seen and truthfully never wanted to meet. Her mind knows Lisa isn’t the reason why she and Lincoln broke up that time but she needs someone to blame and she’s tired of blaming Lincoln. It never seems to change anything.

“No, we’ve never met but it seems we know people in common. Lisa Rix.” She extends her hand and Veronica takes it hesitantly. Lisa smiles.

“You already know my name.”

“Well, I’m sure you knew mine before I said anything. I’m sure you’ve seen a picture of me.”

“No,” Veronica admits. She always got the feeling Lincoln never wanted her to see Lisa, not even in a picture.

“Do you live around here?”

“My father does. I’m visiting from school.”

“A friend of mine just moved into the neighborhood. She lives down that way,” Lisa says turning around to point in the direction of North Avenue. She turns back around to face Veronica. “It’s nice to finally meet you in person.”

“Really? Excuse me if I find that hard to believe.” Veronica crosses her arms over her chest ready for an argument she doesn’t want to have but she’ll have it anyway since she’s got nothing better to do.

“It’s true. I wouldn’t have been able to say that months ago.”

They stand together in an uncomfortable silence as the cool fall afternoon wind blows. As the wind plays with Veronica’s dark hair, Lisa can see what it is about Veronica that Lincoln loves. She’s small and delicate. Lisa’s not. Everything about Veronica from her sea green eyes to her pink lips to her hands that come up to push the hair out of her face is small and delicate. She’s beautiful and Lisa thinks she can’t compare. Besides Lincoln, Michael and LJ, the only thing the two seem to have in common is a fighting spirit. She may be small and delicate but Lisa can see Veronica’s a fighter. She can see it in her eyes.

“Well, it was nice meeting you, too Lisa. I’m going to go.” She smiles quickly and turns.

“I was hoping we could talk,” Lisa says to Veronica’s back. She doesn’t turn back around. “I think I should get to know the other woman in my son’s life.”

Veronica wonders when Michael will ever learn to tell little white lies. She rolls her eyes before turning back around. “Um…sure, I guess. If you really want to. My dad’s house is a few doors down from here.”

Fifteen minutes later Lisa and Veronica sit on opposite ends of the couch, both with a beer in hand. Veronica had offered Lisa something to drink - water, soda. Lisa wanted something stronger. Her excuse, “I guess I’m a little more nervous about this then I thought.”

Finally Veronica breaks the silence. “Lisa, you said you wanted to talk so talk.”

“Do you love LJ?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Good.”

The conversation continues for hours. After the initial awkwardness faded away thanks to the beer, they talk about LJ, Michael, Veronica at school, Lisa’s wish that she had gone to college, their mothers (both long gone), their fathers (wishes they had split), never once touching on Lincoln until they had both had one too many beers. It’s Veronica who brings him up.

“Do you still love him?” If she was in her right mind, she’d know that it isn’t a good idea to talk about your ex-boyfriend with his ex-wife especially when you were his mistress.

They are both on the floor between the sofa and the coffee table both resting their heads on the sofa. Lisa rolls her head to face Veronica, who is still staring up at the ceiling. “Do you?”

Veronica turns to look at her. She just smiles and raises her beer. “Here’s to being fools in love.” Lisa raises her beer. After their bottles clink, they laugh like they’ve just heard the funniest joke.

When they have caught their breath, Lisa looks at Veronica with the most serious expression she can muster. She’s staring straight into Veronica’s eyes. “I can see why he loves you, Veronica. You’re beautiful, smart, and nice.”

Veronica laughs. “You’re drunk.”

“Modest, too. You’re perfect. You can probably cook, too.” She laughs but the laugh is short cut off by the lump forming in her throat. She can feel the tears stinging the back of her eyes.

Veronica can see the sadness in Lisa’s eyes. She moves over to wrap her arm around Lisa’ shoulders. Lisa rests her head against Veronica’s. It had never occurred to her that she was Lisa’s competition even when she was with Lincoln when he should have been honoring his vows. She had wanted him and damned anyone that stood in her way. Although she knew she hasn’t been the one to hurt Lisa, she didn’t stop Lincoln from making Lisa feel the way she has felt so many times - broken hearted.

Veronica knew Lincoln and Lisa didn’t have a relationship that produced a child but they decided to get married anyway. And Lisa couldn’t help herself. She fell in love. Veronica couldn’t blame her. She has been in love with Lincoln since the moment she first saw him.

Veronica pulls away to look at her when she can tell Lisa has started crying. “Don’t cry Lisa or you’ll make me cry. Besides he isn’t worth crying over.”

Lisa laughs. “You’re an awful liar Veronica. But thank you.” She shifts her position so that she can lean in to give Veronica a quick kiss on the lips. It happens so fast Veronica doesn’t have time to do anything. But Lisa’s lips lingered on hers just long enough for Veronica to know it wasn’t just a friendly kiss.

Lisa pulls back and looks into Veronica’s face marked in confusion. “Soft lips, too.” Veronica tastes of beer and the faintest hint of cherry chapstick.

“Lisa…”

“I’ve thought about you a lot,” Lisa says never taking her eyes from Veronica’s. “Just what did you have that I didn’t have? I saw your picture. It doesn’t do you justice. I knew it had to be more than your looks.” She reaches up to trail a finger down the side of Veronica’s face. Veronica’s can’t help but close her eyes to Lisa’s touch. It’s so gentle it’s as if she isn’t touching her at all. “I figured you had a great personality but knowing Linc I knew it was more than that.” Her finger traces a trail down Veronica’s neck and is almost to Veronica’s cleavage when her hand stop’s Lisa’s.

“Lisa you don’t want me. It’s just the beer.”

“No, Veronica. I’ve imagined you and him. I know what he’s like so I wondered about you. What do you do for him that I don’t?”

Veronica opens her mouth to say ‘nothing’ when Lisa’s lips are on hers. Lisa’s tongue slides between Veronica’s lips. The kiss is purposeful and intense as their tongues dance and curl around each other as all coherent thought leaves Veronica’s mind. She knows this is wrong on so many levels but she can’t deny how good Lisa’s mouth feels against her own. How good Lisa feels as she straddles her. How good Lisa’s hands feel as they move under her shirt to run over her hot flesh.

She’ll think of the ‘whys’ tomorrow because right now she just wants to feel this. She hasn’t felt this way in a long time. There has been no Lincoln and no guys at school. She just wants to feel good even if it’s with a woman, even if it’s with Lisa.

Lisa pulls back, her eyes focused on Veronica’s swollen lips. “Maybe we should go to your room.”

“Yeah.”

They get up awkwardly, neither one of them steady on their feet thanks to the alcohol and headiness of what they have just been doing.

“Should we clean up?” Lisa asks.

“My father is gone for the weekend.”

“Lucky me then.”

They leave a trail of clothes in their wake. Veronica’s legs hit bed and she stumbles, Lisa landing on top of her.

“I’ve never done this before,” Veronica says.

“Neither have I. It can’t be that hard, right? We’re both women.”

“Right.”

Lisa captures Veronica’s lips in a slow and sensual kiss before marking a trail down her chin, the hollow of her neck before taking one of her Veronica’s hard peaks in her mouth. She lashes unto their hardness until Veronica’s whimpers. She moves back to Veronica’s mouth as her hand slides down over the slick wetness between her legs. Veronica arches into her touch and closes her legs as she lets out a shuddering breath.

Lisa slowly massages her clit until Veronica mutters against her lips ‘faster.’ Veronica’s breath is warm and erratic as Lisa works her over until she is screaming against Lisa’s throat.

Lisa hovers above Veronica’s slick body watching her chest rise and fall in a fast but steady pace until the pace is back to normal. Her hands are on either side of Veronica’s head and her face is a few inches from hers.

“Did he make you scream like that?”

Veronica opens her eyes with a lot of effort. Her eyelids feel so heavy. “What do you want me to say?”

“Tell me the truth.”

“The truth is yes.”

“Did you make him scream?”

“Yes.”

Lisa just smiles and Veronica smiles back. Then Lisa is closing the gap between them until her lips make contact with the corner of Veronica’s mouth. Then she is kissing her cheek, the line of her jaw until Veronica can feel Lisa’s warm breath on her ear.

“Make me scream,” Lisa commands in a whisper. Veronica thinks that might be the hottest thing she’s ever been asked.

“You don’t have the same equipment.”

“I’m sure you’ll figure something out college girl.”

Lisa lies on her back, her skin burning under the intense assault of Veronica’s mouth as she licks, nips and kisses Lisa’s warm creamy flesh. By the time Veronica is hovering above where Lisa is moist, soft and she can admit desperate, Lisa knows Veronica won’t have to do much to make her scream.

She sits up on her elbows to watch Veronica kiss the delicate skin on the inside of her thighs. It’s quite a view. Her dark hair hides what she is doing but that’s what makes it all the more erotic.

Anything she is about to think is shoved unceremoniously out of head as Veronica’s tongue makes contact with Lisa’s clit.

“SHIT!”

Veronica smiles to herself. Lisa attempts to pull away from the intolerable pleasure but Veronica digs into Lisa’s hips to keep her in place. When a long list of expletives spill from Lisa’s lips and her body goes limp, Veronica crawls up her body until her face is right above Lisa’s. She presses herself into Lisa as Lisa’s arms encircle her.

“I never stood a chance.”

Veronica wakes the next morning with her head pounding and her body sore. Without getting up, she reaches out to the other side of the bed. It’s cold but not empty. There’s a note.

Veronica,

And they say curiosity killed the cat. I’m very much alive. It was very nice to meet you. Don’t be a stranger when you’re in town.

Lisa.
