It was never about them - him and her. It was always about them - him, her and him. Both of them trying get to the one person they couldn’t have. Couldn’t save. How can you save someone that doesn’t want to be saved? So they saved each other. They didn’t talk about it but it doesn’t mean they didn’t know what it was all about. They knew. There just wasn’t a need to mention it.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
They knew what the other meant.
“We can’t do this again.”
“We say that every time.”
“We need to mean it this time.”
They wanted to mean it. They did mean it. They promised no matter what he did, they wouldn’t. They were better than that, than him. Then Lincoln broke their hearts again. And again. And again. Until one time it happened and they couldn’t blame it on him. They knew they had been kidding themselves. They were no better. Maybe, probably, definitely worse.
She left after that. They knew the reason for it had changed and they couldn’t talk about it. There wasn’t anything to say. They couldn’t be any more to each than friends, secret comfort.
