Everybody is Sexually Abnormal.

Oh, Toronto. My new home city, which I love for so many reasons. From the walkability, the amazing food to be found everywhere, to the people so friendly and helpful that I was actually a little unsettled for the first little while. So why is it, in the middle of a city with such an amazing Pride, and for that matter the Fetish Fair I attended ( Read more... )

Pretty much, yeah. At least the Fetish Fair was fun. (If sweltering. Dear god, the heat.)

Guh. I *am* having sex with a trans woman and a large man. We're all just *people* for Chrissakes.

Apparently you're all destroying society. Every time any of you have an orgasm, society crumbles.

Remember that Toronto used to be called "Toronto the Good" (not in a nice way) for a very, very long time. Puritanism there may have been diluted, but it still runs strong in the city's blood.

Those two shrinks are missing the boat. IMHFO, nothing sexual should be in the DSM unless it qualifies as "harming others" or (with strong caveats) "harming self".

I would argue that my addiction to lust is a serious problem for me, and I'd like to be able to get help to work with it. So on the grounds of "harming self", I'm cool with "sexual addiction" being in there.

On the other hand, someone liking some kind of "weird" sex or identifying as something other than "100% male" or "100% female" should not be considered "a problem" and worthy of an entry in DSM. To pull an example out of my butt, why should chubby chasers be considered "sick" or in need of help?

The people I worry about are paedophiles, rapists, repressed gay-bashers, et al. Yes, please, study them all you want, so we can figure out how to at least identify them, if not " ( ... )

True that. This place used to be the uncoolest, puritanical city in Canada. Hence why my aunt S moved out here waaaay back to find a rich, stable husband, whereas my great-aunt moved out to Montreal for the sex, drugs and partying ( ... )

Seriously, it makes no sense at all when there's a lot more likely explanations, except they don't involve 12-step bullshit and aren't heavily promoted by the religious right. The criteria for "sexual addiction" are so malleable as to be nonsensical, and they're really hetero- and vanilla- focused.

People like this should not have jobs in mental health. They especially should not be defining it for others.
