It does have a lot of practical value, and repealing the laws now would not only help people like your friend, but it would also reduce prison crowding and the ruined lives the prison system creates, it would also reduce the absolutely horrifying drug war that's mostly just enriching cartels. Also, it would be healthier for people who do partake.

Yep, there was a time when it was actively being poisoned on orders of the government. Which kind of broke my mind.

I really recommend The Poisoner's Handbook, it's a fantastic, fascinating read.
