Natural's Not In It

This one's been floating around for a long, long time. But, as these posts often do, it takes a specific thing to make me point out, once again, that the game is fucking fixed.

So yeah. Makeup. And this damn thing. Ten "scary celebrity closeups" *cue spooky theremin*. All I'm seeing are nine women who adhere to the standards of beauty and Iggy Pop ( Read more... )

wtf is this shit, fashion, media, feminist stuff, gender, feminism

I get way too delighted when people comment on the weird little references I like to sneak into things.

Another red flag: men who write that they want a woman who’s beautiful, but doesn’t know it and/or doesn’t TRY to be beautiful. Gross me out the door. Men can care about women being beautiful, but if women care about being beautiful, they’re vain and shallow.

Quite. It's a red flag for me as well, in any kind of social interaction.

Back when I used to listen to folkie radio I would sometimes hear this song sung by a guy that went, "No leather and lace/No put-on grace/No high-heeled shoes/No hidden clues..." Even though I have never been dressy, that song really got my back up with its implication that women who like to dress up at all are inherently manipulative.

I see from this page that although the songwriter, Hugh Blumenfeld, "writes here of his down-to-earth wife, Andrea, he himself is as unpretentious." Mmmm, I rather doubt it; pretension doesn't have to wear fancy clothes.

It's just a misogynist who hates the idea that a woman might know things he doesn't and he able to outwit him.

In my experience, pretentiousness prides itself on its lack of adornment. From alt-folk, to some hipsters, to smug white buddhists, some liberal Xtians, to a wide segment of the geek population.

I got an LJ email in advance of your birthday, and then it got cluttered up with all the other email, and anyway, happy extremely belated birthday.
