The writing in his autobiographical stuff is way better, I think, and in the more lyrical (non-porn) novels, like Dhalgren and Stars in My Pocket. I think there's something about the genre conventions of SF, especially older SF, that asks for a flat tone and lack of characterization that makes everything awfully workmanlike.
