early morning observations

this morning, while i was driving to work, i saw a crow commit suicide. his feathers were shabby and he looked like he had a broken wing. he hopped off the sidewalk and walked knowingly into the wheel path of the truck beside me. he didn’t startle. the third part of a second later, i looked in my rear view mirror and he was just a lifeless pile ( Read more... )

I didn't think animals like that could make such a conscious decision. I know that life is very tough for a bird with a broken wing and I know crows can be very unsympathetic to others that are weak. He may have saved himself a lot of suffering at the 'hands' of his own kind.

It must be Thursday. Never could get the hang of Thursdays.
(poor joke perhaps but such is my way of coping)

since dad made me aware of it, i've considered crows to be very intelligent creatures. after i closed my gaping mouth and started to think about it, i realized that crow probably made the best decision considering his circumstances.

in most cases i love seeing that sort of intelligence in animals (when they're not determined to commit suicide). like how tasma now understands that turning a doorknob can open a closed door. thank goodness she doesn't have the right paw shape and trajectory to turn the knob, but she will try and leap at the knob sometimes. she also knows how to turn the shower tap on (she likes the dampness of the tub but hates getting sprayed by the water bottle... i really don't get it).

your quote fits perfectly.

always look on the bright side of life

Crows have been a topic of much discussion lately. Some attacked a coworker that got too close to a baby, there are albino crows in the news and the gardening conference on our work email has lots of advice on how to get rid of pesky ones.

They are extremely intelligent birds and can use tools, it isn't surprising that one could make such a decision. Unfortunate that you had to see it though.

Tasma is odd.

albino crows in the news, eh? wasn't the one from gormenghast the only known albino at the time?
