*ring ring*

me: hello?
lady: hello i'm from telus. are you s_______ s_________?
me: no..
lady: oh, well i was just calling to inform you about a new service telus has...[insert pre-meditated telemarketer schpiel here]...would you like to apply for this wonderful new service?
me: i'm sorry but our house just got broken into. i'm not really up to committing to anything today.
lady: oh my, i'm so sorry! would you like me to call another time?
me: fine.

i think that's the truest excuse i've ever told to any telemarketer.

i came home from school around 4:40pm from the back door. said a cheery hello to gershwin and violet and then realized that the noise of the traffic out front was louder than usual. went towards my bedroom and saw the contents of my sock and unmentionables drawers strewn across my room. stupidly i thought: gosh, i wonder what s________ was looking for in my room. then i realized that s________ is not that messy. that's when i panicked. i looked at the door again and saw that it was ajar and the whole frame on the side nearest the bolts and knobs was completely off. the bolts were rendered useless.

i looked through the bottom of the house (no one was lurking) and then called mum. then i went over to dave's house and asked mrs. dave if she wouldn't mind coming over and being my support on the sojourn to the upstairs. i must have looked a wreck when she saw me.

upon seeing nobody, the police were called in. no fingerprints. nice policeman.

our official handyman boarded up our front door for tonight and the insurance people will be by sometime this weekend.

~~

it strikes me as a bit unnerving that i know of two robberies encountered at dave's house, one previously at ours when the tenant lived in it, and one at the dead neighbour's house (when he was still alive, i think).

~~

so, what was taken? not a lot on the whole -- at least, nothing that can't be replaced with the insurance we have...

my laptop and leather case
a silver bracelet
petty cash (i'm glad now that i haven't been to the bank recently... those baskets only got my scant few nickles, dimes and quarters)
the canadian two dollar bill i had saved from the great bill purge during the toonie conversion
a slovak bill
our cordless phone (back to being tied to a reciever)
my sister's really high quality camera
nearly all my sister's cd collection (appr. 300 or so)...they didn't touch my collection for some odd reason...guess happy soundtracks just aren't to a theive's liking.

...

it certainly isn't pretty, but there are the things that could have been taken from us to consider. my really old books, various antiques (i found my nana's music box tossed carelessly on my bed), really old pictures, the television, computer and, most importantly, miss violet and gershwin.

gershwin seemed a little on edge for the rest of the day and i don't blame him. violet's doing alright though. i don't know what i would have done if something had happened to either of them.

yes, i've been a nervous wreck. my head aches and i didn't even have the stomach to eat all of my dinner (i fear it's congealing on the coffee table right now). it also disturbs me how it could happen in broad daylight with traffic all around... i just don't know..

it puts a perfect damper on the wonderful day i had yesterday (impromptu birthday bash at the bread garden for a_______. HAPPY DAY TO YOU!). and it really doesn't make me feel like doing the history homework i so adamantly wanted to get done over the weekend. the whole incident also makes me want to stay awake because i'm scared someone will come back (although s________ and mum assure me they will not but i'm paranoid anyways and will continue to think about unhealthy scenarios..)

just my luck.

insurance, theft, birthday
