Doctor Who. Should I continue watching?

So, IMHO last nights Doctor Who was seriously lacking.

Maybe it's because in college I'm studying WW2 so was subconsciously expecting a lot. If that's the case and you disagree then fair enough - please do so :)

I've been having a hard time adjusting to Matt Smith's Doctor. I still have my "Tennant head" on and lets face it for anybody following him ( Read more... )

"After watching the first 2 episodes of the new season and getting a rather "Sarah Jane Adventures" vibe off of them"
I feel the same actually.

But then, look back at Moffat's other stories. The main guest star/alien is often a child. The little boy calling for his mummy, Reinette meets the Doctor when she's a child, and CAL is a little girl too.
Also, Moffat said more than once than he beleived DW was a children show. As far as RTD was concerned, it was more a FAMILY show. There's a huge difference.
God, the two last episode felt like cartoons!!! Well, I like cartoons (lol), but we're used to something else... *sighs*
Winston Churchill & the android sounded really like cartoon characters. Lol, for one moment, I thought Destro & The Baroness were goign to appear on the Dalek ship! ;D
Speaking of the news daleks looked like plastic toys...
As for Amy, Mark Gatiss write her way too much like he wrote Rose. I mean, I LOVE Rose, she's my favourite companion (proud D/R shipper :D), but I'd like Amy to be her own character...

I totally agree. There IS a huge difference between family tv and children's tv..

I also totally agree about Amy - except I thought (during the 1st episode especially) that she was going to be much more independent - like Donna. Now I feel like she's gravitating towards Rose (Whom i adore another proud DR/R shipper. Especially with the "ever fancied someone you shouldn't.

I really hope that Amy becomes more independent and her character develops, but i suppose there is many more episodes.. !

Why this episode was not as good as it could be, I've been quite impressed with the previous two, and even this one. Less than "catering to a younger audience" I actually felt they were more throwbacks to old Who than anything else. A combination of creepy and cheesy. As someone who grew up watching classic Doctor Who every Saturday I can appreciate that.

This one, however, was a bit weak, and kind of badly paced, I thought. Tons of stuff, then no stuff at all. And I was actually a bit bored when the plane was trying to take down the Dalek shield (the Doctor seemed to be, too). And the whole approached used to diffuse the android/man was a little cheesy and gave me nightmare flashbacks to the terrible "clap your hands if you believe in fairies" ending to Last of the Timelords.

Mostly I was just bugged by the RAINBOW Daleks. Why the doodly were they multi-colored? They're the scourge of the universe, not sports cars.

I agree! The rainbow Daleks were just... WHY? I didn't see the point in them being coloured. I much prefer the dull, less "glitzy" approach. They were much scarier as well.

Interesting review!

What you mention in the beginning, about this being a WWII episode,... I'm inclined to agree. Mainly because we've already been there, we've had an episode set in the London Blitz, and frankly, The Empty Child/TDD did it better.

I'm OK with the Daleks returning. The explanation was flimsy and nothing new, but I can live with that because I know the Daleks have to be a part of Who (even though I wish they would've been introduced somewhat later in the series). Their design? Eh, LOL. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Daleks is all I'm sayin'. Though I did appreciate it that they escaped with everyone knowing they did, because then there actually IS a reason for the to pop up later ( ... )

Totally agree - I may be bias based on my love for Nine though.

LAME bomb defusing

AGREED! It was so.. stupid, it didn't make any sense what-so-ever to me.

no direction but to introduce pretty but powerful new Daleks

They could have done so much more. It saddens me :(

Aww Nine ♥ He gets all my love too lol. :p
But my love for Nine and the Nine/Rose shippy stuff aside (which I loved, but let's pretend it never happened) - it still stands stronger.
Basically, TEC/TDD told a story. It was a heart-breaking story, it addressed the deepest of emotions and integrated contemporary issues, like the gang of children who are lost and in order to survive, they have to salvage homes during the air raids. One of the appeals of that two-parter has always been the way I can relate to it and feel like I'm watching a programme that knows what it's doing.

Victory of the Daleks had the disadvantage that it was not a two-parter, but if you want to go down that road and have a very special setting, then just do it right. TEC/TDD did, and VotD didn't. :/

I don't know where they would've gone if it were a two-parter. It needed a huge dollop of plot.

I totally agree with everything you said about TEC/TDD. It's one of my favorite episodes and has everything I want out of DW: an emotional story, drama, *cough* Captain Jack Harkness, and of course the shippyness.

Alas, VotD has neither drama nor an emotional story. :/

Well, I do have to say I think you should continue watching, but then I loved the first episode of Moffat's Who. And I watched the first 2 series of Sarah Jane Adventures (taped, but didn't get round to watching S3, but that says more about me than the show. Still haven't seen 'Being Human' either.)

This is definitely shaping up to be more of a children - than a teenagers show, but I think it's too early to tell if that will be in a good way (i.e. look at Potter fandom) or not.

Mind you, Nine was my doctor so the difficulty I had with change came with Tennant. Then, to my mind he treated Jack appallingly, so a total change doesn't bother my fannish self at all.

For me it's down to the strength of the drama. If the next ten episodes are strong and well plotted, more often than not, then I'm in - be it teen of kid viewing. If not...

Well, we'll see.

There was a crack in Spaceship UK too. It's this years Bad Wolf.

I think I'll continue to watch although whether I can bear two weeks of River Song I don't know!

Nine was my doctor

He was totally my Doctor too! But David wormed is way into my heart. Maybe 11 will? But I doubt it. In my view I just can't see him lasting, but I know the love of the fandom for Matt Smith so he probably will...

And I agree with the appalling way Jack was treated!!
