Chapter 8 - One last Memory
-------- ` --------
Koki shook his head frantically. He was so against the idea that Nakamaru had in mind. He was willing to do anything for the youngest member of the group, but to smear his clean image was just too much to ask for. He didn’t want others to think negatively about his image.
I’m a rapper for god’s sake! I am not gay! What is Nakamaru thinking? How the hell did he think of this stupid solution? No way am I going to pose as someone who is crazily in love with Kame when I am straight at the first place. Jin isn’t going to be fooled by this white lie. This is Koki the rapper you’re talking about! I am no gay, I’m telling you all.
His eyes widened as he shook his head again, “Definitely not! I’m not going to do that! Jin definitely won’t buy that if I am the actor. I will fail without any doubt so I can’t be the one doing this. I won’t do it whatever you may say.” Koki shifted a distance away from the eldest member, causing the latter to heave out a deep sigh.
Silence filled the entire room as T-TUN stared at each other, waiting for someone among them to speak out but no one eventually did.
“Why don’t you do it then, Nakamaru?” Koki asked after he could not stand the silence anymore. “You’re telling others to do it. Why don’t you do it? This is a great time to showcase your potential as an actor. So you do it.”
Nakamaru stood up almost instantly from his sitting position as he waved furiously to the other members, showing his protests. He was the most suspicious guy in KAT-TUN! Jin would definitely sense something fishy if he suddenly declares his love for Kame, though it was only acting on his part.
“Why does it have to be me? I’m the most suspicious looking, right? You guys said so! Nakamaru-kun is definitely the suspicious one in KAT-TUN that it is no doubt him! Why can’t it be Ueda or Taguchi?! That’s pure sabotaging me!” Nakamaru exclaimed in total disbelief, he can’t believe his own friends trying to sabotage him.
Ueda frowned, “What sabotaging? We’re doing this for Kame, right? It’s not that this is your idea that you should carry it out alone. You know we’re not saying that. I honestly think you suit the role better than the rest of us. Jin knows me best, so he definitely won’t believe me when I suddenly come up to him and said that I’ve fallen in love with Kame. That just won’t work. You should know why.” Ueda looked away as he moved closer to Junno, clasping the younger one’s hand onto his own as he smiled brightly at him.
“How could I have forgotten that?” Nakamaru murmured, trying to think of other solutions to save himself out of this weird situation. It was at the same moment that he felt something vibrating in his pocket, letting out a beautiful melody as well.
“Nakamaru, we didn’t know you’re gay too, to come up with such idea.” Koki joked, hoping to reduce the tension in this room.
“Shut up! I’m not!” he ignored the bald member as he fumbled his hand into his pocket, revealing the love of his life, the latest model he just bought, as he answered it immediately, “Hello. Nakamaru desu … Kame?” All the rest turned their eyes to him when they heard the caller’s name. They were instantly by his side, hoping to hear bits and pieces of their conversation.
“Kame, don’t cry. Tell me what happen, okay?” Nakamaru paused to give way for the youngest member to speak his mind and when it was his turn to reply, he let out a small whisper, “You want to go home? But Kame … yes, I’ll try to pick you up soon. Take care in the mean time, I’ll be there shortly.” Nakamaru ended the call and looked up at the worried faces of his band mates.
“There is no time to waste anymore. I’ll do it.” He merely threw that short sentence to the rest of his band members before he walked out of the room.
-------- ` --------
Once again the dressing room was filled with an enormous amount of silence, this time they had a newfound understanding of the situation.
Their youngest member was hurting right now at this moment. Though they could not even hear a thing what was being spoken, they understood and took charge of the situation.
“Do you think Nakamaru’s plan will work this time? I mean, he did tell us that we shouldn’t interfere in their affairs, and that it’s better if they work it out themselves. So do you think…?” Koki broke the silence as he looked at the former leader of the group worriedly.
Ueda smiled in response, patting Koki on the shoulder to give him some assurance. His right hand was still holding onto Junno’s large hand firmly.
“That was our first plan, but it failed miserably since Jin was adamant on keeping an arm’s length away from Kame. Therefore, we have to intervene this time. If we don’t do something right away, their relationship will deteriorate further. Nakamaru may look like a dork sometimes but he knows what he is doing. So… don’t worry, everything will turn out fine eventually. Right, Junno?” he asked the younger one, receiving a huge smile from the latter in response.
Koki sighed. Ueda seemed to be in his love dreamland again, with Junno as his knight in a shining amour. And both of them have started to ignore him once again. They said they were only good friends but their obvious actions stated otherwise. They’re in love. He could see right through their eyes. Humans could lie with words but never with their eyes for they are the windows to one’s soul.
Kame and Jin were somehow different from Ueda and Junno though. Their actions, their sweet nothings and their loving gazes towards each other were so obvious that the rest of the members knew immediately. Initially, Jin and Kame had feelings for each other but they were not strong enough to make them commit in a proper relationship. Thus when they eventually sorted their feelings out and announced their relationship to the rest, T-TUN jumped with joy, full of happiness they felt for the couple.
They were so happy back then with nothing to worry about, being in a world of their own. But now, their relationship had turned sour, all because Jin stubbornly wanted to end it.
Why did that had to happen? A tragic accident that nearly cost both of their front men’s lives. They thought … they thought they would have lost Jin that tragic night. He was in a more critical state than Kame, with several inner injuries and a broken spine that needed attention immediately.
There was so much blood…. Koki shivered at the thought of it. He remembered the huge pool of blood on the wrecked car when he visited the accident scene. It was so scary. It was almost impossible for someone to survive such a severe hit. The car had toppled upside down, the impact more on Jin’s side of the car, trapping him for a moment.
That one fateful night, Koki recalled.
-------- ` --------
Red flashing lights and wailing sirens of ambulances pierced into the air as they arrived at the accident scene. T-TUN had reached the scene too and they looked at each other worriedly after they saw the severity of the crash.
KAT-TUN had just completed their last show for the day and it was 9.30 pm sharp. They had planned to have dinner at Ueda’s place that night but all of a sudden, Jin and Kame decided not to join them for dinner, and politely said that they want to spend the time alone. Indeed, KAT-TUN’s schedule was pretty packed during that week, so the couple hardly got to spend any quality time with each other.
Kame and Jin disappeared into the darkness, their shadows heading towards the car park where Jin’s car was. They wanted some time alone; the rest of the members understood and smiled, giving them a thumb up sign.
Koki remembered the exact same words that he said to them as the couple moved off towards their car. “Ne Jin, Kame! When you mean ‘some time alone’, what do you really mean? You two seem so suspicious to me, you know. Well if you just tell us frankly that you need to do that thing desperately, we won’t mind that.” He teased them, knowing very well what he was asking but did so anyway, earning a shock and widened eyes from his team mates in return.
“Koki!” they exclaimed simultaneously.
Kame hid behind his lover, holding Jin’s arm with both hands as he silently muttered, “Koki, you pervert.” His cheeks turned crimson red, feeling ever so hot at moment of time.
“Koki! You are such a pervert!” Jin smacked his head, with Kame still hiding behind his back, causing him to not see the grin on his lover’s face, “We didn’t plan for that but we can add that on the list for tonight, ne Kazu-chan?”
Kame burrowed deeper in Jin’s back, muffling his lover’s name, “Jinnn!!!!”
The pair left the place happily with hands held firmly together, and bided them farewell with their free hands. Koki never dreamt that that farewell bid would become sort of a goodbye… Jin and Kame looked so gracefully beautiful and happy together.

T-TUN were having their dinner at Ueda’s apartment, smiling, laughing, and teasing each other playfully when the phone rang. Nakamaru picked it up with a smile on his face initially, but that smile faded away as he listened to the call. Finally, he put down the receiver with trembling hands and looked up at his band mates in horror.
“What, Nakamaru? What is it? Who called?” Ueda asked him urgently as he sensed something ominous from Nakamaru’s expression; it was a look that the eldest member seldom gave.
“Jin … Kame … Accident.”
~`~
The scene changed to another in a flash, with them rushing to the scene of the accident. Panic, anxiety and horror feelings overwhelmed them as they reached. They ran towards Kame when they saw the latter being wheeled out, his eyes tightly closed as the paramedics pushed the stretcher into the ambulance.
Realizing that they only saw Kame, Nakamaru immediately approached one of the paramedics and whispered in panic, “Where is Akanishi?” He gave him an unreadable expression and pointed.
Nakamaru followed the finger that pointed to a certain direction where a group of paramedics were crowding at, “Akanishi is still trapped in the car. We are still trying to get him out.”
How could this be happening? Just a moment ago, they were so happy and this had to happen!! “Ueda, Junno and you will follow Kame. We will stay here with Jin. Stay in contact for any updates!”
Ueda nodded, taking Junno’s hands into his as they climbed into the ambulance.
~`~
Nakamaru and Koki could only watch anxiously as the paramedics tried to get Jin out of the car. And when they did, their heart shattered. Jin was frighteningly pale and covered in blood as he got carried onto a stretcher and into the ambulance. Without wasting any time, they followed suit into the ambulance.
“Kame… Kamenashi only took a short time to … Why, why Akanishi …” Koki whispered in a pained tone as he looked sadly at his unconscious friend. Jin looked so lifeless; the oxygen mask was probably only thing that had kept him breathing then …

Nakamaru glanced through the time on his wrist watch as he drove past a familiar route, and into a narrow road that he knew of, stopping in front of a big bungalow house.
Am I doing the right thing? He sighed as he walked out of his car, “Well, I can’t back out now. Let’s do this!” Nakamaru took a deep breathe before he proceeded to the door. He was about to ring the door bell when the door opened, surprising him for a moment, but he regained his composure when he noticed the thin form in front of him, eyes red from crying.
Kame hugged the turtle plush toy he was holding in his arms tightly. Apparently, it was one special gift Nakamaru knew were from Jin, therefore he remembered to bring it along even when he kind of kidnapped his friend to this country side.
“Nakamaru, can we go home now? Can we, Nakamaru? Please?” Kame said in a weak voice, his eyes pleading for some comfort and assurance he needed. He didn’t want to stay here any longer, it hurt too much.
The elder one scratched his head as he pretended to check the time on his wrist watch, almost muttering nervously as he gave Kame a tired look, “I understand that you want to go home badly, but it’s already 12.30am… and I don’t feel like driving till the early mornings. So if you don’t mind, shall we set off back to Tokyo tomorrow morning instead?”
Nakamaru noticed a pout began to form on the younger one’s face so he quickly said, “Kame, please?? We just finished our dance practice when you called, and I’m really sleepy, the bed is what I could think of right now.” He smiled when Kame nodded his head in understanding and went into the house with a yawn.
Let tomorrow comes, and I will act according to my plan. It will only be an act and not more than that. The show starts tomorrow.
-------- ` --------
Jin sat alone, darkness evading the living room with only a small light coming from the kitchen, as he kept on staring at the piece of untouched cheese cake Kazuya had left on the coffee table. Though how much he wanted to push those thoughts away, he knew he had hurt his beloved incidentally earlier on.
Even cheese cakes had their own history as Jin painfully recalled the good moments when they were lovers. Truth to be told, he didn’t know why exactly he was keeping his distance from Kame. He himself didn’t know how much longer he could force himself to live a life without Kame.
I’m sorry, Kazuya for hurting you so much. It’s better if I hurt you now than later, knowing the condition I’m in, and my unusual temperaments at little things, I don’t want to cause you more pain in the future. I don’t want you to be the source of my pain and burden. You should live the life you have always wanted and not be trapped with someone who is crippled, and have low chances of ever standing up ever again.
Jin could not imagine the tears that he had caused his Kazuya to shed, and the pain as he shuddered at the image of a fragile and broken Kazuya. To hurt Kazuya was the last thing on his mind but he could not help it. He didn’t want any of his sympathy. He didn’t want to give anyone the impression that they should take care of him since he couldn’t walk anymore. Jin merely didn’t want to place the entire burden to his dearest lover.
Kame has so much in his hands, and with his character, Jin knew Kame would visit him everyday at his house, even after a tired day at work. He thought ending their relationship was better though his heart hurt more than anything now.
Maybe … maybe it’s better if you find someone new.
Jin did all these for their own good but even said so, he was just human. He bit his lip as he quickly reached for the phone on the stand beside him as he slowly dialed the number he knew so well.
Screw everything for just tonight, I should not leave Kazu emotionally alone. After all, his abrupt departure was my fault to begin with, to think I did not even stop him from leaving.
I’m so sorry, Kazu-chan.
I wish I could tell how much I still love you but I can’t.
Jin sat quietly as he waited for the line to get through; he was about to voice out some words when the other person cut him from doing so, “Hello!! You surely want to speak to Kame, right? Hold on for a moment.” Jin raised his eyebrows in confusion.
Nakamaru? Why was he the one picking up the phone? It was Ueda the last time and now Nakamaru? Is someone playing a joke on me?
-------- ` --------
“Oiiii, Kame! It’s your phone! How could you leave this in the living room? Kame, wake up!! It’s your phone! It must be important for someone to call you at this time. Kame!!”
“Nakamaru, shut up. I want to sleep.” Kame pouted as he shoved off his friend, hugging the plush toy closer and closed his eyes again.
“The phone is all yours. I’m just going to leave it here.” Nakamaru simply said, leaving the phone beside the sleepy figure, walking out of the master bedroom immediately, deep in thoughts.
“Nakamaru!!!!!” Kame whined as he leaned his body against the board, sniffing softly as he stared at the small object, picking up the call after a few seconds, “Hmm, hello? Kame … nashi desu.”
Jin stumped in silence as he heard the tone Kame used; one that is vulnerable and lonely, the very same one that he knew so much when his beloved was feeling so sad. Jin cleared his throat as he voiced out, “Ka … Kame.”
Kame’s eyes widened in surprise the moment he heard that voice, “Jin?” he whispered softly.
“Ano Kame, I’m sorry, I disturbed your sleep. I’ll just hang up …”
“No!!! Jin, don’t! Please.” Kame pleaded as he cried softly. He was frightened that Jin would cut the connection between them, but as he listened to Jin’s even breathing, he calmed down as he finally whispered, “Jin, I want to meet you. I want to meet. This will be the last. I just want to be with you till morning then I’ll leave. Jin, onegai. Give me the last memory of us, and I will not bother you anymore. I promise.”
Jin felt tears in his eyes as he listened painfully at those words being spoken, how he knew it hurt his Kazuya a lot saying that to him. “Hmm, I’ll be waiting, Kazuya.” He ended the conversation as he stared into the empty air, his tears falling freely by now.
Our last memory, Jin thought.
