In all her life, Reinette had never felt so powerful. Her marriage finally elevated her to a status befitting her education. She was making a name for herself in literary salons throughout the city. "Oh," she said quite breezily, after a brief glance to ensure Catherine had indeed left her alone. It simply would not do to be speaking with a wall. "The child believed you well enough. But the woman was never sure what to think. It has been some fifteen years after all. That is some time between calls, despite your sex."
Men, it seemed, were of a great irritation to Reinette of late. Or perhaps that was only her husband.
Upon closer inspection, Reinette noted that seemed hardly altered at all. Oh, there were surely things the woman noted that the girl did not. And the girl noted but not the woman. Yet on the whole, he was much the same.
Reinette the woman continued to study the arrival.
"I assure you," she addressed his crouched position. "Despite my aspirations, there is no need to kneel."
He could feel his cheeks get warm, trying to hide his embarrassment as he slowly hoisted himself to his feet. He studied her as he became taller. It was all too familiar, just the way he remembered. Her clothes were the same and her stance was the same and her hair was the same. Even the way her eyes moved was the same.
"Well I didn't want to seem over eager. Wasn't exactly sure how long I should wait between visits. Fifteen years seemed like a good round number. Mystique and all that."
He stuffed his hands in his pockets, rocking back and forth on his heels. The suit felt like it might be a little too large. It didn't feel like it quite fit right anymore.
"Besides, you've been very busy. Look at you Reinette, walking the gardens of Versailles."
