Karla's read every book she has, some of them twice. So the ones she can part with easily enough have been taken to the book exchange, and now has a few new ones, which she's putting in her backpack when she spots Anna.

Casually, "Hey. Haven't seen you around in a while."

Anna startles, though more like someone who's been caught thinking too deeply than someone who's prepared to bolt.

Mostly.

She meets Karla's eyes (presumably) and smiles.

"It--yes. I needed a little time to myself. You know how it is."

She shrugs.

"Have I missed anything particularly earth-shattering?"

The body language is more than a little familiar. Karla presses her lips together for a moment, then offers a small, crooked smile.

"Yeah, I guess I do. And, um...not too much, assuming you've heard about the big stuff that's gone down lately."

"The--yes. I have. I'm--did you know either of them?"

Salla is squatting outside the main entrance, smoking his last cigarette for a few hours. They don't let him smoke inside any more. Look, he didn't realize those were kids under 12, and come on! He started smoking at 11! What's the harm, man?

He has a scarf tangles around his neck and his favorite hat tipped (he thinks) rather rakishly over his eyes. Sunlight doesn't blind, but even with sunglasses, it gives him a headache after a few minutes. But he needs nicotine, damn it.

Suede leopard print is very sexy! Goes with everything!

Anna stops a few paces away, looking almost startled.

Almost.

"Salla? I didn't--hi."

He tips his hat up slightly and grins at her.

"Yo."

"You cool, Anna?"

She considers this very carefully, nudging her sunglasses up her nose.

"I'm--I suppose it's an accurate enough description, at the moment."

She tries on a smile.

It kind of fits.

Marisela wears a wide-brimmed straw hat with a white linen duster when she goes to the exchange. Her skin is a little less susceptible to sun damage than others, but she's taking no silly chances.

But it's spring and it's simply gorgeous. She's looking through a box of random stuff when she sees Anna and smiles.

"Hey there. Keeping the sun off well enough?"

Anna nods, a little hesitantly, and smiles.

"The sunglasses make it pretty obvious, I suppose."

"Just like the wide-brimmed hats, yeah. It's good to get out on days like this, though. I'm glad it's not like in the movies. I'd have hated to be stuck only going out at night."

"Not quite like the movies, no. Though there are a few who'd like to try that, regardless."

Anna does not quite make a face.

"You've not been to any of those cities, I take it?"
