It would not be exaggerating to say Jon had seen and done much in a relatively short span of years. He'd seen the Wall (and been over it, too), climbed a sheer cliff face with nothing but the moon to guide him, fought Others and dinosaurs-- but never had he done this, sat by the bed of someone he loved, while they slept for days and did not wake ( Read more... )

Susan woke all at once, with a jolt, as if she'd been slammed from one world back to another, and for the space of a handful of heartbeats all she could really do was stare and try to catch her breath. She was back where she belonged, Rickon was sound asleep beside her, and Jon--she grabbed him, throwing her arms round his neck and holding as tightly as she could. Her face pressed against his shoulder. "Thank God. It wasn't real," she gasped, shuddering.

Her reaction was as much of a shock as the suddenness of her waking, and Jon moved quickly to sit on the bed beside her, his arms circling her shoulders, holding her up. "You're back home now, safe," he said softly, worried apprehension stirring in his stomach. "I have you," he murmured against her hair, "everything's going to be fine, it's alright." His mind was a whirl of wondering-- where she had been, what she'd seen, what could have affected her so-- but he knew better than to press her for answers. She sat there clinging to him for a long time without speaking, her heart hammering in her chest as if she had just run a race. "It was England," she managed after a time, but she couldn't explain any more than that before her throat closed up. What if they weren't all right? What if something had happened? She wanted to see if they were all right, but part of her was too scared to even look.

He nodded, his mouth twisting with wry understanding. He knew well why that place and all it might have held would have been difficult for her more than the others. He would never be done, it seemed, ruing the divide that existed between her and her siblings; though he didn't often have cause to remember it here, he could not say the times he did had ever been pleasant. "You've all been asleep... were they all there with you?" He'd assumed that was the case, but had realized suddenly that it might not be.
