Reading roundup (kidlit edition), and memes

Nov 03, 2021 23:14

October was weird for me with fannish consumption, because I have in my hands two epic fantasy things that I think are actually good (one Hugo homework reading, one a rec off the Serpentcast), and some other things I've been curious about for a while, and I could've gone on to watch season 2 of The Expanse, but instead I've been: a) (re)reading ( Read more... )

yuletide, hugo homework, a: viktor dragunsky, a: louis sachar, russian, short stories, kidlit, character meme, fandom meme, a: mary robinette kowal, reading

They are SUCH fun books! I really enjoyed them as a middle schooler, and the rodents and my brother when they were even younger.

One of my favorite things about going to SF conventions was the art show. We collected a fair amount of artwork over the years from them. I'm kinda sad that I didn't recognize any of the artists' names you posted.

It's funny, because SF art kind of didn't register in my mind as a thing until I went to my first convention and started paying attention to the Hugo voting (which happened around the same time), even though there were of course covers of individual books I loved before that, and of course I've always loved fanart for my fandoms and avidly followed the fanartists I knew on LJ/Tumblr.

I'm not really an art-on-the-walls person (we do have a couple of sentimental-value pieces, but mostly what's occupying our walls are maps, and a few things brought back from our travels), but after browsing some convention dealer rooms, I came to the realization that I'm very much a fannish jewelry person. My favorite purchase from the Worldcon I was at remains my "butterbug" bronze pendant, which I never miss an opportunity to wear to meet-ups with anyone know knows the Vorkosigan Saga, and I spent literal hours browsing the booth of Spring Schoenhuth, who was up for a fanartist Hugo that year ( ... )

I am very much a "stuff on the walls" sort. My office walls are nearly covered. The rest of the house is a little bit less overwhelming. I tried taking some shots with my phone. There's just enough light to reflect on the glass. Probably my phone's focusing magic dingus ( ... )

I think it's still possible to embed images in comments via HTML (i.e. img src = etc.) but I've been storing all of my images off LJ (on Flickr), so I'm not sure if there's any way to do it without an external source...

Boston Worldcon -- would that be 2004? I really enjoyed the only one I've gone to, which was conveniently in San Jose, and hope to be able to attend some more when they're a bit closer to home than the last couple have been.

I tried googling the artists you mentioned, but I'm not sure it's taking me to the right people... No worries if LJ or the phone won't cooperate on the images, though :)

oh wow, it has never occurred to me to watch sudoku solver videos. But if they have good explanations on why they're doing what they're doing, that might actually be helpful. I have some written guides on how to efficiently solve sudokus, but there are some of the harder things that I never quite grasped. um. i like doing sudokus, okay? :) I should check out some of those videos!

It had also not occurred to me that solving Sudoku live while explaining what you're doing/why was a thing ( ... )
