I'm enjoying reliving through Buffy episodes (and seeing L's reactions)- very happy you started on the rewatch again. Season 4 has some wonderful episodes even if the season as a whole didn't gel. I do tend to prefer Buffy post high school.

It's nice to get back to it! Though O, who had been bugging me throughout the last two years to start watching again, is annoyed that now we always want to watch Buffy.

Season 4 is kind of a mess -- Adam as the season's Big Bad really doesn't work for me, and a lot of the later (non-Adam) Initiative stuff is also not very interesting to me. But there are some really fun episodes this season -- "Pangs" is definitely one of my top funny one, and I would put "Who Are You" on my top 5 favorite Buffy episodes of any season (that I've watched so far), and it's my favorite season for Spike, who is one of my favorite BtVS characters.

I found myself enjoying the world of Confection more than I thought I would

While reading through your Buffy recap I realised I can hardly remember anything about the show ... maybe the names ... *lol*
I think I need a rewatch one of these days!

It hasn't been very long since the first time I watched for me, and I find I remember individual fun scenes and major arcs, but I don't always remember where they are in relation to each other. So like, certain scenes I thought were from earlier or later seasons end up surprising me when I run into them where I didn't expect them :)

I really enjoyed season 4 a lot, it was fun to see Buffy and Willow at college. The Initiative and Adam were pretty lame lol, but there are so many funny one-off episodes that I find it easy to just concentrate on them, and ignore the arc part of the season. It seemed like the writers didn’t think the main arc through, other than thinking that it would be cool to do some high tech stuff that year? It just didn’t work though as a follow up to Angelus and Faith to then have all of the emotional impact of the Initiative be focused on a side character only, and not really affect Buffy

Yeah, I've pretty much forgotten everything about the arc except for Spike's chip. And I agree, it doesn't seem like the writers cared about it either XP

You also make a really good point that season 2 and season 3 arc was such a personal one for Buffy that season 4 feels like a let-down even on the idea level.

I guess that they did at least end it all in a cool way with Uber Buffy fighting Adam, but yeah The I In Team and Goodbye Iowa were pretty much build around Riley’s response to Maggie’s betrayal, and I think that’s a big reason why they didn’t work, because we had only just met Riley and weren't that invested in his character

Ha, turns out I totally do not remember what the resolution with Adam was. I mean, beyond Buffy vanquishing him in some way -- like, zero details XP I remember the season finale, but of course the season finale was "Restless", so that doesn't help with plot much. Pretty sure that's the only season, of the five full seasons I watched, where I have no memory of the resolution with the Big Bad.

I think part of the problem is that even though *I* am invested in Riley, and so is Buffy, none of the rest of the cast is, and so the episode ends up being fairly one-note -- Riley isn't being particularly interesting as he's processing the betrayal and then Maggie's death, and then of course he's just ( ... )
